my ole buddy of 14 years died 2 weeks ago,she pretty much kept the deer out of the garden, now without out her around they are helping themselves.very painful to lose a dog so don't want to get another one, so thinking about a motion sensor on a light or maybe a radio to scare them off, anybody ever tried it?

We have had no problem with deer in our garden since I added two strands of 50 pound test monofilament above the fence. On is at about six feet and the other is about 7 feet high. Before that, deer would jump over the five foot high fence.

I know what its like to loose a dog. I got a pup given to me 7 years ago. He was a great watch dog, great companion, and loved to cheer me up when I was down. I tied him up one night, everything was fine, the next morning, he was dead. I was without a dog for almost a year, when I got the dog I have now. He was free to a good home. He was in town, and spent most of his day penned up in a cage 2' x 4'. His previous owner had him for 5 months, and decided to let him go, because a cadge was no life for this dog He loves to play, run, do flips, and run circles. Him and I go for short walks. The distance of 2 hydro poles every night. I always call him a clown, because he does something to cheer me up when I'm down. Get another dog. He won't replace your other dog, but you will still have enjoyment with another.
Bruce.

If you want to try a cheap (and legal if your worried bout that!!) way to keep the deer out, here is what a lot of folks I know do. Talk to your barber and get a sack full of hair. Stuff some in to a few old sock and hang them from post around your garden. The deer don't like the smell. You have to replace the hair every few weeks because it looses its smell. People say it works good. I have a pack of dogs that keep the deer out of the garden. Lost one a few weeks ago and it sucks. Sorry for your loss.

Dave

When we had our old dog put down last year, she couldn't see, hear or walk to come up and greet us. Knew it was time. Best dog we ever had. There's nothing like having a bad day at work and coming home to something that is just happy as can be to see you and wagging it's tail, wanting to play. Always brought a smile back to MY face. I agree, get another dog.

I am sorry for you loss, we had to put ours down last fall. I can honestly tell you, if you decide you want another dog, check the shelters. We found our new friend at a shelter, the shelter advertised her as not people friendly and not good with other pets. I called them, mom and dad went to check her out, the next weekend, I got off work and took the family to pick her up. She's a great friend and companion, I could never have imagined finding a new dog that fast, and a (6 month old) that was so friendly to the family. She just joined right in. Good luck.

Two weeks ago, when we came home from the farm, one of our dogs didn"t come to the fence to greet us. I went into the yard to look for him and didn"t see him. I then checked the garage. I found him in his "spot", but dead. It was a complete shock. He hadn"t shown any signs of being sick. Even though we have 2 others, still miss Chester.

I totally agree--get another dog. We had our 14-year-old Lab put down a few years ago. We have many wonderful memories. Molly, the Lab, and our son arrived the same year. They grew up together. I have three beagles and an English setter, but wish I had a Lab that I could just take a walk with. These four dogs just want to hunt. The pain will pass, but the memories will be there forever.

You can't pet or play fetch with a motion sensor light or radio. I'm sorry about your dog, but I really do suggest at least looking into new puppies. They'll take your mind off your loss. Best wishes.
