Memorial Day as we know it was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country.

Many of us have either family or friends that have served and died in military service.

Please remember these young men and women this coming Monday.

Below is a photo of my father's B17 bomber crew taken in May 1943.

third party image

The oldest crewman, Stan Austin of Burwell, Nebraska, known as 'Pop' was 26. He is standing in the 'star' on the fuselage.

The youngest crewman, Bill Guilfoil of Chicago, Illinois, known as 'The Kid' was 18. He is on the first row, far right wearing a T shirt.

Bill Guilfoil enlisted at 17 years old because his older brother, Jack, had been captured by the Japanese on Bataan and was a prisoner of war.

Most of us have heard of the Bataan Death march.

Bill was the smallest in stature and was the tail gunner on the B17. He celebrated his 19th birthday on August 24, 1943.

During his 28 combat missions, he shot down 5 enemy aircraft. The average number of 'kills' was 3 for every 50 missions.

The day he was KIA on October 5, 1943, the bomber was under attach by 10 enemy aircraft. He shot down 2 enemy aircraft.

Other crewman shot down 3 enemy aircraft.

Bill was hit by enemy fire and was unable to either see or move from his post at the rear of the bomber.

When the pilot gave the final order to bail out, Bill replied 'I will stay with my guns'.

Just one story of thousands of young men and women that need to be honored and remembered.

My friends uncle who just passed was a 25 mission pilot which I never knew until his death. Yes, not much was said about WW2 by the vets. My Dad who is alive is a WW2 vet and never stoke of his time in service.
One cold Feb at dusk I visited the wall and found my college friends name. I recalled the beers and card games and his daughter who might have been one at his death in 68. Walked around the other vet sites and returned after sun set. It was a different place all together in the dark. Many carry a cross in your heart for a KIA who you were close to. Fly our flag high. Army 68-69. Joe

Thank you, my love, for your wonderful post. I am blinking back tears for your dad. I loved him and miss him. For those of you here on this forum, James Wendell Howell is fourth from the left, standing. You will note the ammo belt. As the bombardier, he was charged with the responsibility of safeguarding the Norden bomb sight and was required to wear a side arm. He passed from this world March 18, 2007 and is sorely missed.

While we remember those who gave their lives, let us not forget those who are now serving. James and I shake the hand of every military person we see and tell them thank you. This is still a great nation and a lot of that is due to the sacrifices our military personnel make to keep us safe and free.

May we never forget those that have gone before, the ones now serving, and those who are yet to come. Thanks to all of them.

Great post. It just amazes me how young those guys were. I'm 26 now and know of way too many 20 somethings that I wouldn't trust with a car. And they had a plane with a mission and were getting shot at.

I too am a Vietnam veteran. This weekend is the time to remember your buddies that were killed next to you, in this war and in all others, their young faces still vivid in your mind. Don't ever forget them no mater how hard it is to bring up these memories.

Since you didn't leave an email, I will make this public. I would like to extend a thank you for your service to our country. Because of your sacrifices, I am free. Thank you.

"It is, in a way, an odd thing to honor those who died in defense of our country in wars far away. The imagination plays a trick. We see these soldiers in our mind as old and wise. We see them as something like the Founding Fathers, grave and gray-haired. But most of them were boys when they died, they gave up two lives -- the one they were living and the one they would have lived. When they died, they gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their chance to be revered old men. They gave up everything for their county, for us. All we can do is remember."

My Dad's uncle was in the Bataan Death March.

He survived to come home, but he was never the same...

Our freedom wasn't free, that's for sure.

Here's to remembering all the veterans this weekend!

Howard

I lived thru WW II mostly as a teenager working on our farm because everyone else had snlisted or was working on a wartime job. Many of those working to build Corsairs for the marines or tires (Akron Ohio) for the trucks and airplanes worked two shifts .Then I went to the Korean war as a pilot for the newly formed Air Force. Many of my older friends ended up as Gold Stars in the family home. WE all missed the Viet Nam war but I lost a grandson in Iraq Almost two years ago. Wars never end , We are now in the greatest fight of our country and we need to honor in all ways those that are keeping us free. No talking with the terrorists. The only talk they understand is at the end of an M-16 Nuff said Henry

The WWII generation didn't talk about the war. They never considered themselves heroes. My dad turns 90 on Father's Day--didn't see much action, spent most of the time in the Phillipins. Those that came home, came home to a greatful nation.

The VietNam vets came home to nothing but scorn and ridicule. The first thing I did, the day after I got home, was burn my uniform and campaign ribbons. I was 21 and my faith in government had been shatttered.

Now that I'm much older, and hopefully wiser, I can't get through our nation's songs in church any more without choking up. In spite of all our faults and bickering, it's still the greatest country in the world. Don't forget our vets and what they paid so we have the freedom we enjoy today. Thanks to all of you who served.

Last August I was involved with a Christian aid project in Vanuatu ( I was fixing their tractors, others in the party were engaged on building work) One place we visited in our free time was an abandoned U.S. air base just outside of Luganville on the island of Santo. The plant life has all but taken over, the buildings have long since gone, but just standing on the broken surface of the main runway gave me a funny feeling of a place that had been full of life, you could almost hear those young men. We stood there, thought about them, thought about what could have been, silently got back on the bus and left. Don"t ever forget them.

I as a Viet Nam Vet Can never forget what some of my buddies gave for me. I don't like to talk about it,but it's burned into my heart, and mind. These men of all wars, do need our remembrance , support, and prayers. Most people think it's just time off work to have an extra day to party and such usually only thinking of the fun they are having not even considering the real meaning.
