I have worked some with rebar rod. But today I wanted to cut off about 8'feet of a rod so as I could carry it in the truck. I cut it half way with a hack saw and put it across my knee to bend it in to and the rod snapped like a tree twig. It aint full steel. Acted like cast. What is the rerod or rebar made of? It welds great.

I think domestic rebar here in CA is mostly made from scrap metal (junk cars) in an electric furnace. That is the only steelmaking that is still done here, as far as I know. I didn't know there were different grades of rebar though.

Funny story about rebar... when I was a little bit younger a buddy ( 1dollar) and I were making a bracket for an SMV sign out of rebar. I did the same thing, cut it about half way and thought I'd just bend it the rest of the way. Well it didnt just bend it snapped and the jagged break went right into my arm, taking out a rather large chunk o' skin. Not the best feeling in the world, but I guess I learned something from it. I aslo worked in the concrete business for a while and saw many guys learn that rebar doesnt bend like one would expect it just snaps.

Like most things in life there are many grades of rebar. We always get no grade bendable because it is best quality for price. Some is probably jour old junk car, others are better steel. Regardles the rebar is one of the most important parts of concrete projects that is overlooked.

Notice all the pics on TV of the thousands of masonry buildings in China that collapsed in the quake- I've yet to see a piece of rebar sticking out the pile- just a pile of bricks. Small wonder so many fell.
