We paid something like that for a small load of 7/8 crushed stone a few weeks ago. It was probably about 10 tonne and delivered about 35 miles.
It used to be about 5.50/tonne off the crusher a year ago. I don't know what it is right now, but it's probably 6+ I'd think.
60 bucks wouldn't get you a load of pit run next to the pit last year or since a number of years here, and probably not 15 tonne when anyone was doing it for that...

Sells by the ton in Ohio. How would you sell it by the yard? Scales don't have yard sticks

spook never buy gravel by the yard, there is no way to "prove" you got a full measured yard, 3x3x3] in other words you may have ordered 10 yards, but is it ten? or only 9? we always sell any material by the ton, and provide a computer printed weight ticket to the customer, it shows the time of day, what the truck weighs empty, and what it weighs loaded, you pay for the difference, so you only pay for what you actually recieve. yes the price is high now mostly due to the cost of diesel, [ cost is not only the delivery truck, but all the equipment used to manufacture the gravel too], but our good government went one better, as of several years ago all gravel pits are now declared 'open pit mines' and must be permited and inspected as such, and must meet all mining safety codes [MSHA] except underground parts [unless there is underground activity] this is extreamly expensive, you think OSHA is strict?just wait untill you meet the boys from MSHA! and the worst part is for all the stupid type safety rules to be in the book, somebody in the U.S. has actually done those things and got themselves killed doing it, its bad about the prices though we're seeing a lot of one load type people that are regulars that just can't afford to buy our product now, but we cant pay our bills if we make it any cheaper either

I don't buy a whole lot, just for driveways and other projects. I recently put some pea gravel in my driveway, I like that a lot better than the usual 21AA or whatever. I can groom it with a garden rake, and if the lawnmower picks up a little rock, it doesn't seem to go as far, making me think it might be safer to use.

Does the weight change much after a heavy rain?

Some material I would imagine drains pretty quick. If you're delivering loam though, that would change quite a bit I would think.

matt the weight after rain really doesnt change, pure gravel doesnt retain water, and material with 'fines' [ dirt in it] will weigh more when wet but we dont sell that, unless the customer orderes it wet, we dig in the stock pile until we get dry material and deliver that instead, the wet stuff is spread out with the blade and let dry out then repiled

It doesn't weigh more wet??? I'll remember that one for the weighman.
The stuff I haul is just pit run that can have anything from sand right up to 12" rock mixed in and that stuff will nearly double in weight when it's saturated.

I do agree that it's nearly impossible to give an accurate scale based on volume when you're working with a wheel loader, and weight is a lot more accurate in dry material.... but a lot of us who piddle at that don't even have a scale, so volume is the only measure we have. 4 passes from an L90 is my load; basically 12 yards in dry material.

Last summer at my house near Durango, CO $15 a yard. That was picking it up with my own dump trailer. Now delivered they wanted that per yard plus $250 delivery fee. My house there is fairly remote but that's why I finally bought a dump trailer.

I have never seen it sold by the ton, only by the yard. I bought 5 yds of pea gravel last year for $116.

Guess we do it different...

What gets me is fuel went up like 25% so gravel goes up 400%? Can't believe anyone is still buying it.

It does take extra fuel to get it out of the ground and into piles and then extra to haul it.This will make a disportional amount.

Probably because fuel is 50% or more of his cost. And none of his other costs are going down. Around here, gravel yards and cement companies are on a 3 or 4 day week. You can't make a pour on a Saturday, unless you are on a big construction project.
