Been alot of talk lately about the high gas prices but it seems a guy here in North Alabama is doing something about it. He claims to have invented a system that gets hydrogen from water and burns it along with gasoline. He had a car that was getting 17mpg. With his system it was increased to 50+mpg. It cost about $5500.00 to have it installed on your car. Said it would eventually run off total hydrogen. He was interviewed by local tv station. You can see it at www.whnt.com

Believed by those who apparently do not understand the basic laws of physics, chemistry, energy etc.And by those eager to hear what they want to hear.

Hey, B&D...ever consider the actual compression ratio that a typical car engine operates on..?? I don't mean the mechanical compression ratio. I mean the actual compression ratio when you figure in the VACUUM level restricting the fuel/air Volume to the cylinder... At 20" vacuum in the intake, I doubt an engine is operating at a true ratio of over 4:1 !!! I wonder what would result from a variable compression to maintain optimum Combustion Pressure, albeit at a huge reduction in volume..?? What is YOUR Take on this idea..??

Too bad Clooney retired from active duty here at ytmag. He"s right on the cutting edge of the latest and greatest on these topics. There has also been work on variable displacement/rariable engines to achieve a similar effect. Complex and expensive. It"s simpler and just as effective to just run the engine on fewer cylinders at part load. As for the on board hydrogen generator. Or wind turbines mounted on your car, trailer etc. Sorry, in brief. It doesn"t work.

This exact same topic was discussed on this board a week or two ago. My opinion is the same as it was then: Snake oil.

Based on the backpedaling on the TV station's web site, it appears that they may now realize that they were duped.

Roger,

There's a syndicated talk-show host named Phil Valentine who lives here in Nashville. He has one installed on his 10 year old Lexus. He is running a controlled test on it that is being jointly conducted by the installer of the unit and him. He expects to have the results of the test sometime next week. I'm eager to hear what he says. I believe he's a stand-up guy.

Got a brother who bought one. It's really just an electrolysis rig that doesn't separate the hydrogen and oxygen, and the resulting explosive gases are fed into the air cleaner. Backfires could be an exciting display (to put it mildly.)

It won't work well on new (1983 and newer) cars with computers and fuel injection because the computer controls the mixture. So to fix that they make a product that helps you lie to the computer about what the O2 sensor is picking up.

They're getting better with the electrolysis reaction. Apparently using pulsed current is more efficient than brute electrolysis, perhaps because of resonance.

Some of these people atually beleve in their thing. The sad part is news media giving them publicity to rip off investers. 100 percent do not work. It takes more energy to get the hydrogen out of the water that you get from burning the hydrogen. Just the way the world is made.

Ken, Been following the advent of running automobles on Hydrogen gas for over 20 years now. The main problem they have had, is a save storage vessel. They have developed a hydrogen cell, but the cost of the cell has been extremely high.
I can't see where it would not work if one only produced hydrogen gas on the supply and demand principle of what the engine required.

Also don't take much DC current running thur water to seperate the hydro. and Oxy gases. While in college a few of us quite, shy, never do anything wrong guys, filled a balloon to about 6in in diameter with hydrogen gas we produced in Physics lab. then we hung it on the black board of the lecture hall, set it off with a match on the end of broom handle. After the big bang, we had people running into lecture hall to find out what had happened. It shook the whole building and everyone thought windows were going to blow out...hhmmmmm

Geeese none us could hear for over a week...wonder why.. Never never ever tried that again.."Oh when we were young and foolish AND now I've gotten old and stupid."
