I'm thinking of getting a new diesel tractor next year for hay and I really don't use enough to get a big tank and have it delivered. If I get on of the pickup truck tanks, get I go to the distributers and fill up or do you have to buy a certain amount? Can you get off road gasoline also?

I buy my off road gas at the pump and pay full price (taxes included). Then, once a year I fill out a form and get my state tax refund (about 35 cents a gallon). That is the way it's done here in PA.

Local gas station here in Pen Hook has off-road diesel at the pump.

This will depend on your distributor as to how many gallons you have to buy.
The regulations on tax free fuel is the same for 1 gallon as it is for 10,000 gallons.

Most bulk plants have the ability to pump small quanities but some do not. If your distributor does not then just ask what stations in your area sell no tax fuel. He will know since he fills their tanks.

One BIG word of caution. Make sure your truck tank is less than 119 gallons. If your tank is 119 gallons or larger it is considered a bulk tank and is regulated by the DOT as a hazmat shipment. Believe me you do not want to go that route.

Most states have tax free gas but it is a tax refund and not a tax exempt at the pump situation like diesel is. More of a pain than what it is worth with all the paper work unless you use a lot of it.

I get mine filled at the bulk plant, I've got a pair of 52 gallon Delta tanks. Each state is different on state taxes. Here, I have the state permits so they take the state taxes off before I get it. As to fed taxes, at one time it was 50 gallons min. My distributor treats it as one transaction since I get more than 50 gallons a month and he bills me once a month. You can get off-road gas, but, at least here the tax has to be refunded instead of taken off up front.
