Hi all,
I have been browsing this site for months and find it very helpful in every aspect. This is my first post. Anyway,I just purchased my White 2-85 about a year and a half ago. What type of hydraulic oil should I be using in it? I use this tractor for round baling and my feet are getting hot from the hydraulic reervoir under the cab. There is Dextron in it right now, this is what was in it when I bought the tractor. I'm guessing that the hydraulic should not get this hot, but I can be wrong. I'm assuming that I may need a heavier oil. What are all of you using? I am open to all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

This system was designed to use AGCO Type 55 hydraulic oil, it is thinner than regular hydraulic oil. The oil is thinner so it will flow through the filter and into the pump easier.
A heavier hydraulic oil will make the pump cavitate unless the outside temperature is really warm. Type 55 hydraulic oil would be the oil called for in the operators manual.

I doubt that the type of oil you are using is the cause of it running hot. The most common cause of a hydraulic system running hot is oil passing over a relief valve. If you have a safety relief valve it might be set a little too low. If the system operating pressure is 600 psi, then the safety valve should be set around 700 psi. This is just an example since I don't know what your system is supposed to be set at. rw

I use either Hy-tran or 821 for hyd. oil. It should not get that hot that your feet get hot. I would check your pressure on the hyd. pump could be a little worn out maybe cuasing it to get hot like that.

Thanks for your help. I will check the things out that you all specified. I am wondering if changing the filter would help, I don"t know when it was changed. Is it still ok to keep the Dextron in it or should I switch to a different type? I am thinking that Dextron is similar to hy-tran. According to the label on the container, Dextron can be used as a hydraulic oil. I wanted to hear from the experts on this forum to be sure.

It would not hurt to change the hyd. filter. If you need part # for filter I will look it up. If it says dextron can be used as hydraulic oil then use it.
