I just saw a bleep on fasteners and the cost !! Well what I do is go to the local nut and bolt supplier and get all their "Floor sweepings" I usually get a couple large boxes for almost nothing and I just take some time to seperate the stuff and put it in my bins! I don't do it all at once, just spread it out on a table and start with one item at a time. I haven't bought any nuts/bolts etc for years and will have enough to last my life time..... Jim in N M

You may think this is crazy but it does work. Go to a store that sells coin sorters. Get the set that is like four or five cake pans stacked inside each other. The top one has lare holes and they get smaller as they go down the stack. You have to just shake the junk around. You will be surprised at how good they can presort the junk for you.

I've got a buddy that gets surplus from whoever took over Curtis Industries .. He at one time got 11 semi loades of surplus , ranging from nuts and bolts to spray paints to brass to hydraulic hose crimpers and key machines..Anything and everything that they sold..I've got more than the local hardware has..Early on everything came in whatever box/container it came in shrink wrapped on a pallet, now it's all shoveled loose into 3X3 pallet boxes..Still a great deal....

Sounds like something I"d do. Oh wait I did. I bought a whole wall covered in jars and cans of nails and screws etc at a yardsale for I believe $2. The old lady was moving to a retirement community and that stuff was here late husbands collection. It liked to ruin my life. I had the entire garage covered with cans of stuff only to find they weren"t sorted in the least and that guy had kept every bent nail and rusty nail and screw he found. It took me a year to finally clean the mess up. Meanwhile I had projects backing up and sitting on top of the junk because I didn"t have anywhere else to put it. In December 2007 I made a new years resolution that my garage would be clean enough for the car to go in by 1/1/2008 if I had to throw all that stuff away. I had to start throwing the cans away if they were just too assorted or contained mostly bent nails. Having the right fastener is no help if you can"t find it when you need it.

As long as my great-grandfather lived, the only metal that ever left the farm was the steel cans they recycled back into the war effort in WWII.

He died when I was 21, and it was only afterward that I learned you could actually buy straight nails, all new and shiny. It was a revelation.

When I was a kid, my neighbor would scavenge every straight nail, nut, bolt, washer, etc that he'd get his hands on. Had stacks of the flat produce boxes that he was gonna go through and seperate one day. Everyone in the country had been through those boxes at least once, cause it was 30 miles to the nearest hardware store and gas was almost 60 cents a gallon.

Being resourceful like that does pay off, it's good to be able to sort and store these things so you can still look through them and or have an idea of what you have, I used to find a lot of quality fasteners on large construction sites, especially high strength bolts for structural steel connections, ASTM 325, sometimes these guys would leave small kegs/barrels of them behind or leave em littered on the decks. I find that most materials and things I have stored are useful, but you do have to draw the line sometimes, things can get disorganized quickly ;)!
