I recently bought a JD 212 and I have had a problem from the start with it. After about 15 or 20 minutes it starts acting like it wants to quit. I press in the clutch for a second and it goes back to idling normal but it then goes back to wanting to quit. The gentleman I bought it off of tells me its just a coil. I would like to have another opinio about it before I go and sink money into a coil that may not fix the problem. It has a 12 HP kohler Cast Iron Engine. I would appreciate any and all advice about my problem. Does anyone know what a coil usually runs for one. I dont know anything about this mower, but I dont want to get burnt on pricing.

Thanks in Advance

Herb

I have a JD 112 which from these posts sounds like it has the same coil as the 212. I think the coil is bad. I get no spark. How can I test this coil with a multi-meter, what are the specs for the primary and secondary windings? I got 1.4 ohms for the primary. If it is no good can I buy one from an autoparts store and what should I ask for? Thanks for the help.

David

Mike & Bob
I knew you guys were feeling a bit down in the dumps. So I figured that answer would cheer you lads up.
Again that coil is nothing special. It's the same one used on the 110's the boys have. Now the critters on the LX188 a weenie little twerts to fit under the hood. One of these days I'm going to measure the primary and secondary resistance on those ones.

How old are the points and condenser ? I'd suspect a cond. before the coil.

All you need is an INTERNAL RESISTOR coil. A INTERNAL RESISTOR coil from ANY automotive parts store will do. You do not have to buy the coil from a Kohler dealer. Some people think the point stay close longer on a K-series Kohler so you need the KOHLER coil but this is not so. I checked the point action on the TWO K-series Kohler's I rebuilt for Dad this spring. After the point open near TDC to fire the spark plug on the compression stroke, they STAY OPEN through the power stroke and the exhaust stroke. The points then close at the begining of the intake stroke to begin building the magnetic field in the coil to enable the firing of the plug on the next power stroke. The the whole process is repeated.

Has anyone pulled the tin off the engine and cleaned the COOLING fins? Traditionally, they are plugged with grass etc, and the air cooled engine will overheat. Cheap insurance, even if it is the coil.

I would start by checking for a fuel system restriction, all the way from the tank, through the fuel pump, and into the float bowl.

If there is no fuel restriction, other possibilities are bad condensor, bad coil, bad ignition switch, or the circuit breaker tripping for some reason... check it's terminals and the push-on connectors for rust and corrosion.

If you NEED an ignition coil, get a genuine Kohler, or equivalent. The breaker point dwell characteristics of this engine are enough different than those of a typical automobile ignition system that an automotive coil will run HOTTER, and also wear the points more rapidly than the CORRECT coil.

The 212 uses the plain ordinary 3.0 ohm 12V automotive ignition coil and delco points. The charging system does use that under the flywheel stator system. I was thinking fuel pump, fuel filter or trash in the tank. Odd..... posted that response with part numbers and it's disappeared. Then the answers to drafting and drag/inertia squared replays didn't work either. They showed up as their own post instead of attached to the original question????? ????? ?

Delco points???? (Repco, perhaps?)

Buick, in my own experience, getting the correct Kohler coil IS a good thing to do, Also, on various small engine boards, over the years, I have seen MANY posts by folks having HOT coil and short point life problems after "subbing" an automotive coil o these Kohlers.

I REALLY feel that the best advice here is to get the "genuine article".

It's the ordinary style ignition coil.As long as the internal resistance is 3-4 ohms. The points are designed to make/break 3-4 amps. Certainly if somebody uses an automotive/race/high performance "12V" coil which has the internal resistance of 1.5 - 2.0 ohm. And is intended to use with a ballast resistor on a bypass start engine. That subbed coil will be the cause of trouble.

This is FUNNY... the "BUY THE BOOK" and "GO BY THE BOOK" BUICK suggesting subbing a generic part! LOL!
