Does engine oil have a shelf life? Reason I ask is that I've got about half a quart of 10W30 riding around in the truck for just in case. It's been back there for a while, and was wondering if it has a sort of expiration date.

Thanks for any help.

Kevin

Thanks everyone. I suppose it will just stay put until I use it up.

I would say forever. If you don't want it, I'll be glad to take it. Experts probably disagree.

If it does my vehicles should long since be toast. Im still using some Shell 10w40 that I bought a decade ago at an auction which came in wax paper cans dating to the 60's/

Gear oil has a shelf life, 2 years! As the other poster said, it is not that much the other 4-5 qts will pick up the slack. Dunno if i would trust the whole 5 qts if it was that old.

Since it is already millions of years old then what's a few years going to hurt it.

since most things use 4-5 quarts you should be fine even if it is "bad"

Since its half a quart, Id be more worried about the possibilty of contaminants getting into to it, even with a tight cap.

Since it's already a couple million years old, eh, I guess a few more days (years) wouldn't hurt.

On a more serious note, shake the bottle up. This will pick up any of the additives that may have been added in the oil off of the bottom.

How long ago did the dinosaurs start converting themselves to oil?

It wasn't the dead meat that did it ----it was the vegetation and trees .....

are all the cows done calving yet? better yet is all of the snow you got last week gone? people are finally able to get some corn planted.
i'm seeing more 12 to 18 row corn planters than i remember seeing last year. i think there was lots of corn planter dealing going on as late as people got started.

Almost done. Probably 20 left and one heifer calving as we speak. I'm gonna go check her in a little bit before we go for supper. Yep, snow is all gone, man that was a sight. It was no problem when it was light and fluffy but when it started to melt you could pretty much forget it. There's a little bit of field work up here, but around here there's very little farm ground, it's mostly all pasture, hay, and trees. I'm kinda itching for some black dirt to be honest ; )
