With the price of scrap going so high, i've heard of some yards by us paying $12 a hundred with the dumpster delivered to your place, has anyone seen an increase in old tractor and hit/miss engines in the scrap yard. I hate to see this equipment go to scrap that could be good for someone and have helped to pull my fair share of it from the scrap yard. The problem is that now, you would have to pay the scrap yard an exorbant amount to get it from them especially things that are heavy like a Cat D4 or Cat 60. I pulled a Farmall 140 and JD A parts tractors from scrap last year and some Cat 15 dozers a few years back as well.

I hope those that can look for this old equipment that could be saved before it is scrapped. I personally don't even scrap the bare housing since you never know when even they could break. I'm amazed that people will still scrap perfectly good farm tractors too, it seems that they don't realize there is a market for it.

Yea! I saved a 14 ft. JD wheel disc from the scrap yard. It had a broken shaft in front. I replaced both front shafts and some bearings, and blades. The front half is all rebuilt, whole disc is in very nice shape. I paid $100 for the disc and put $300 in it, used it five years and retired from farming. In this part of the country there is no way I will get my money back, too small for these big farmers. So I will sit on it, no scrap yard.

I try to save as much as I can from scrap, and am willing to pay a reasonable price, generally a little more than scrap value. The problem is that people, in this area anyway, are not willing to advertise what they have. Instead they immediately load it up and take it to the scrap yard, where they can get $260/ton for old cars, trucks, and farm equipment. Take, for example, that 2 ton Chevy truck I said I would have bought. If I had known it was for sale and it was within a reasonable distance, I would have offered the owner more than what he was going to get for it as scrap.

If it makes anyone feel better, I just saved a Cub Cadet 100 at my local scrap yard. Only bad thing was they already mangled the steering wheel. All it needs is a clutch & throughout bearing.
I was there couple days later & a fella brought in a "54 Chevy 2ton in real good shape. I would of bought it, but couldn"t afford it. I about cried when they picked it up & tore it to pieces.

I see another side to this issue. I am always in the market for bargain tools and equipment. I constantly search Craigslists and other ads. But when you go to purchase these items people want crazy prices for them. To me nothing used is worth more than half its retail cost. Just saw a Lincoln Porta torch for $400. New it's $275 in Home Depot. Yet these guys wonder why no one even calls on their ad. People say they hate to scrap things but won't sell at a reasonable price. Just tried to buy a rusty 6' snowplow blade that I'd like to put a quick mount on formy Bobcat. He won't budge from the $300. It's still sitting ther 3 weeks later.

I've never seen any tractors in the scrap yard after being there many times. I always see good stuff thrown at the dump though, last time I was there me and my Dad loaded a very nice old Ford lawn tractor that someone threw away, but they made us throw it back, now with the scrap prices so high, they don't let anyone take stuff at the dump anymore. :(

I woulda bought that old 2 ton Chevy! $550 for a truck like that around my area is unheard of, it'd be more like $3500.

Sort of odd, no one will buy stuff, but after it is scrapped, they all wail and moan, that they would have paid a huge price... I am shutting down a machine shopm no one was interested in buying anything, but once it was sold, they all wanted it.. When I resort to selling nice stuff for scrap, I make sure that it is unusable.. I got sick of that old game... Folks wait til you have to send it to scrap, and try to make a fortune.. Torch and a sledgehammer take care of that...

I"ve got a nice JD 1600E chisel plow that is on it"s way to the scrap pile. I have tried to sell it and seems nobody is interested or they expect a gift. Twenty minutes with the gas ax and away she goes. In that load will be a 6 row AC cultivator and whatever else I find in the fence row. The plain truth is, folks don"t want to pay anything for this old stuff but the cry crocodile tears when the scrap man cometh.
