Thanks guys i guess i will just top it on off. The unit was made in 94 and has not been used since 2000, and before that was only used to mow 4 arces of hay feild, so there is not much wear at all. I have never had one before so i waanted to see what most guys are doing.

Thank you

Andrew

Unless the fluid looks milky I wouldn't bother changing the fluid. Maybe once every 20-30 years if it gets used a lot, otherwise it's probably not worth the effort. Standing the mower up vertically will probably work the best, then the full-level plug will work as a drain.

Kind of a judgement call on changing it, mine was like a coffee milkshake when I got it, leaked out the cover up top, tightened that, even broke a bolt, extracted it out and replaced,no more leaks, but that grass soaked oil on the deck sure burns nice, that lube was really nasty. Splash lube system, I'd lean on changing it more often, say if you had one since new especially at the beginning of each season or at recommended hours. Hard to say whether it will ever make a difference on wear, whose measuring that, but makes you feel better, yep fresh aaaawwwwllll in that thar gear box ;).

Will be interesting to see what it looks like since changing it last year, it does not hold much, always water in these things that is why I change it and is what must turn it to a coffee color.

I used the front end loader to flip mine over, change blades, tighten gearbox to deck bolts etc., I can set it so the filler plug is a drain when upside down, at the lowest point, just found an old lifting eye/tie down from a '55 ford truck that was made into a trailer, will weld same in appropriate place on deck to make an easy pick point. If no loader, just vacuum/suction it out like Allan said, maybe flush, repeat, did mine last year, it sat upside down for awhile as I did all the repairs it needed. If using an electric drill type pump, remember not to pump anything flammable, if flushing, I like flipping mine over and draining, next time will do after mowing.

Considering that they sit 1/2 the year, condensation accumulates, and the work that gearbox does along with all the shock loads, it's a good preventative maintenance thing, mine calls for a 00 or 0 lube that I can't get in small quantity, so I used lucas 90 wt, check your book to see what is called for, also check to see of the outer gearbox shaft seal is leaking when turned over, suspect mine might be, little maintenance goes a long way on these mowers there is not much too em, and they do a ton of work.

On some of those gearboxes there are bolts going up from the bottom that retain the seal and/or bearing housing. Try removing one of the bolts, and see if the oil drains out.

Works on my OLD TSC unit, anyhow!
