Honestly I am pretty clueless about this all - but we were given a JD 111 Ride on mower and here are the issues I need help with to get it going. Issue No. 1 - Apparently there is an electrical issue because they said the battery was just replaced but I can"t get ti started without jumpstarting it - and then it is dead as soon as I turn it off.

Issue No. 2 - The PTO is having issues. When I first get it running - I can engage the PTO using the switch - the blades run for about 30 seconds then they quit and I can"t get the switch to engage them again. Unless I shut it off, jump it, and engage the switch again.

If I need to take it to a repair shop I guess I will - I just wanted to see how serious this was and if it is something that i could be guided through with a little help.

I will greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thank you.

I think that the various posts have given good advice. I had some of those troubles. The fix in my case was to tighten the right rear engine mounting bolt that holds the ground cable.

I had the exact same problem with my 111. Battery was bad. PTO would kick in but then the juice left over from jumpstarting would run out then PTO wouldn't go in. Just because battery is new doesn't mean it's good. You occasionally get a bum one.

My neighbor had same problem and corrected it by replacing the voltage regulator

The pto has to have power to stay engaged. The pto as you call it is just electrical magnets. If I remember correctly, you should hear the magnets engage [click] when you switch on the power even when the motors not running [with a good battery, the battery charger on or the jumper cables connected]. If you leave the jumper cables on I'm guessing the blades will continue to turn after starting. I think as stated that it has a bad battery or bad conections. Try putting it on a battery charger and after a short charging period, start the tractor with the charger still on. Even if the battery is weak, it should stay running with the mower running. If so, you may want to buy a new battery. If the battery is fully charged, even if the voltage regulator is bad it should run and engage the blades. The only thing that would happen is that after a while the battery would lose its charge. This post is from past experience on a JD 111 I once had. Good luck.

You need a multimeter and a wiring diagram from 1-800-522-7448. Then trace through the circuits. Taking guesses and replacing "this and that" until the problem goes away is not trouble shooting. It's an expensive waste of time.
