OK, I have kept this beast going pretty long, has more than 280k on the clock. Went to start it this evening and no go. Wife tells me that it has been "hesitating" a little when she turns the key first thing in the morning. I had time to try and jump it this evening, but even with a jump it just clicked and hummed a little, then it was dark and I gave up. Had the starter rebuilt a couple of years ago as well as a new alternator within the last few years.

What order should I start looking at things to trouble shoot this?

As usual THANKS all,

Kirk

Is this a great place to get help or what. Ask a question and go to bed and pretty much guaranteed that you will have something to consider when you get up.

In a little bit I will go out and look at some of the simple things suggested so far. Don't really like the sound of the poster that suggested a seized engine, but that had crossed my mind as well. Oh well, just have to take it one step at a time.

Thanks Again,

Kirk

kirk I hope I am wrong about it seizing up but just wanted you to check before you spent $ on a starter like my father did and when I asked him could he turn it by hand he told me yes it turns after I was trying to find out what was wrong for about an hour I decided something wasn't adding up and tried it for myself and sure enough couldn't budge it, pulled the pan and 2 mains, found 1 had spun. after the spun main was loose it turned easy. hope your luck is better,Roy

Got a few minutes yesterday afternoon to look at it in the light of day and started making sure everything was clean, bright and tight. Decided it was easier to remove the starter to check connections than contort myself to reach it from the top through the engine (not sure it even can be reached from the top, maybe with the right combination of extensions and knuckles). Once I had the starter off I jumped it and shorted the control lug. Starter pulled out to engage, but did not spin at all. Sounds like the problem right there. Thanks for looking,

Kirk

Either alternator locked up or starter shot.Take the belt off and try it.

I'd be leaning toward a D.O.A starter.

First place to look is the starter(bad solenoid) if you bought a rebuilt check for a warranty, several have a life time if you had the old one rebuilt you need to have it done again.

with that many miles I would try to turn the crankshaft by hand to see if it has seized up on you then the starter.
