Valve Spool Wiper Installation Question

Hello. I'm in the process of re-assembling the control valve for a Bobcat 371, and have a question about installing the spool wiper. The new wiper is made of a harder material, and seems to be smaller in diameter than the spool. Does this need to be heated in order to be more pliable to fit over the end of the spool?

I can see why you'd want the wiper to have a tight fit on the spool, but I am afraid of damaging it during installation unless I can get it more pliable. Any thoughts?

And yes, I've double-checked the P/N, and it should be the correct wiper.

I used to build prototype hydraulic valves for a specialty military supplier back in the mid 1990's. We used to soak the seals in oil before installing them onto valves. If you want to use heat to soften up the wiper be sure you dont go to hot, I would think that 160-180F should be fine,(maybe heat the oil in a steel container) because the oil will be hot in the machine when running it. Also use a plastic install tool to make sure you dont tear the wiperseal. Try to stretch the wiperseal over a cone of some kind this should expand it enough for the install. Have fun.
