Darnit!

I just replaced that silly throw-out bearing some 30-odd-years ago and it's bad again already.

'Spose the next thing yer gonna tell me is to replace the clutch disc while I'm in there too?

Humph!! Somebody 'round here is costing me money! :>(

They used to tell us after power washing a combine you should run it for at least an hour or two before storage and grease the greaseable bearings too. I don't think that was the problem here, just a wild guess here with the looks of things.

That's about as irritating as having to add a 1/2 pint of oil to my car after 4000 miles!

Or as bad as the 8630 leaking oil!

I guess the galvanizing just couldn't save every part of that machine!

Bless their hearts,

The boys that had the machine during the interim sure got the good out of it, that's fer sure. :>)

Gotta tell ya tho, I'm having a really fun time putting this old honker back together. Can't wait to hear it go again.

If that Hydro is still good, I'm buying the coffee boys! Put it on my tab. :>)

Yeah,

It's that over-center snap clutch on the right side of the main shaft.

Someone has been into it since I tho, 'cause that tin cover is missing. For some reason that fact just drives me up a wall. Gotta find one of those little gizmos. :>)

Really, really getting impatient to get that engine hauled up on top and running. Gotta get all these "live" shafts repaired first tho. :>(

I still remember the unique rattle that tin cover had; we had 2 "Fs" in the mid-70s 'til sometime in the 80s, one bought new and the other used. My Dad sold his when he quit farming; swapped mine for a L2. Could never figure out.....still don't know; factory original parts would last a long time; replacement parts would never last as long. Ours were both variable-speed/traction drive or whatever the correct terminology was (not hydro-stat). Weakest part of the machine was the input clutch shaft bearings; whittled the frame with a torch just a tiny amount so you could get that heavy sucker out without removing the wheel. After the original failed, they were good for about 2 years; we kept an 'extra' at the shop, ready to be installed. Combines been gone 20-something years; that 'extra' is still somewhere at the shop..... .

They don't make them like they used too. My Saab Sonett alternator went out at 300,000 boy was I upset. Well at least the starter is still working.

I know how you feel Allan.

I just had to put a belt and 2 bearings in the mix mill after only 35 years or so of use.

There was a quality assurance tag signed by Bob somebody (i think) saying that this would be a great peice of equipment cause he inspected it. I though about calling him and letting him know how well his stuff has held up.
