Next week I will be planting an acre of timothy/orchardgrass hay with a broadcast seeder. Since this method does not cover the seed, must I follow up with the cultipacker or some other way of "burying the seed"?

We use a cattle panel drug behind the four-wheeler.

I had a local landscaper friend come in and hydro-seed this lot last week, spraying the seed mixed with water, shredded paper mulch, & fertilizer. Its a common method around here, especially by highway depts.

It's quick and not too expensive but I'm noticing all seed is not in good contact and the sparrows do get at it. A hand roller and hay much might have been better but a lot more work.

I almost wish it would stay like this, green and no mowing !

For small stuff, I drag a metal frame behind my four-wheeler and it seems to work fine.

or just drag a piece of fence behind something to cover seed you just have to get in in contact with the dirt even a lawn roler would work on an acre .

For an acre, you can use a garden rake.....

Or something like a spike tooth harrow or spring tooth harrow or disk to work the seed in a quarter inch or so. Else it will dry out in the sun and the birds will eat it.
