A friend bid a contract to clear and mark the route of a natural gas line. Said there was marker tape, but between deterioration, bad workmanship or whatever, the tape is missing in areas. This same bad workmanship leads to no mapping and the line could be 6 inches or twenty feet deep. Metal detector lead to limited success. Found more of the blasting wire than the tape. Looking into a higher end metal detector. So the questions is; what else would work to locate this? Charged line and dangerous.

there are different types of line finders..we used ones that you had a transmitter put on top of the ground where you knew the pipe was and then the receiver that you used to locate the pipe..we then had probe bars to make sure the finder was on... the other type line finder i liked best was one that you hooked up to a pipe to soil reading station or to the pipe, then use receiver to find pipe grab probe bar and make sure.. this one has worked for up to 4 miles from transmitter..this was where there was just one line in the r.o.w...we located lines from 30 inch to lines as small a 1 inch... the 30 inch goes around the beltway 8 in houston tx...

Use a Metrotech 810 (or equivalent) and go inductive on it. First choice would be to go conductive but on long runs with limited access to the underground plant you will have to go inductive. Metal detector would be the absolute last choice for me. Good Luck, Greg.

the county or gas company should know the exact depth, and placement of of the line. that is really weird if they dont cuz they are really good at recording things like that. If they dont just take a metal hanger and make it in to an L and hold the bottom of the L and it will pick up the magnetic field left by the gas line and it will point out the actual placement of the line assuming it is a PVC gas line

If you are using an ordinary metal detector you won"t have much success. I"ve located gas lines for years with a "pipe horn". One part-the transmitter-is placed near the suspected line and the receiver is carried several feet away and waved over the (again) suspected line and emits a signal. It works best with two people and is simpler than my humble explanation. TDF

At the city where I worked we had much better luck finding them with a backhoe and green operator. After they broke a couple and had blowing dirt and dust cover them up and scare the s*it out of them they were a bit more careful. TDF
