I have never seen any use for the notch on the top of many PTO cover guards. What was it intended for?

Before the advent of rotating shields right ON the PTO drivelines, the open PTO shafts were covered by a telescoping "tunnel shield". The not was used to attach the front of the implement's "tunnel shield" to the tractor.

That "notch" is where the spring-loaded keeper bolt on the implement's shield hooked.
