Local weather stations are calling for frost tonight in parts of Central IL. Will it hurt the Wheat crop? The fields have really greened up and started growing as the weather finally warmed up a little, now it is cold again and really wet. A friend said the wheat is not far enough along to be hurt by frost. Is this true?

Don't whink I'll worry about the frost tonight. It can't hurt mine any more than having water stand on a fair share of it from January until March. That really hurt it!!

Yep, he is right. All of the wheat I have seen around here is still small. Now last year this time when we got that cold snap it really hurt the wheat because it was alot farther along. The wheat we cut for other people last year looked ok but was the worst wheat they had in years and in hindsight should have been torn up and planted to corn. Wheat is pretty tough but the like everything else, the wrong weather at the wrong time and you will have troubles. bill

A wheat trader used to say that; "Wheat is the toughest weed in the world".

Last year here about the 20th of April we had 3 nights in a row in the low 20's. Knocked the first (and for the most part only) hay cutting back 1/3 to 1/2, stunted pasture and made a mess of bout every thing. UK got some wheat experts from all over the country to come look at the wheat crop. They decided the wheat was done. About a third of the people around here sprayed or disked the wheat. The other 2/3's figured they would cut it for hay because if wheat was gone so would grass hay and they could sell/use the hay. Of the 2/3 that were figure'n on cutting hay about 1/2 of them got busy planting beans and replanting corn and just did not get round to getting it cut. As it kept getting later the wheat kept looking better. Of the 1/3 or so of the total wheat crop here that was thrashed, I herd of NONE, I MEAN NONE, that made less than 40bu/a. Alot of folks around here figure on 30-40. There was more here that made over 50 than less. If you get some frost on your wheat and think it's hurt, don't spay it. Figure on make'n hay out of it,(hay is going to be real high here again) and if it looks too good in 3 to 3 weeks to cut for hay, see what it will do.

Good luck,
Dave

I"ve seen it go both ways...

Had a crop booting out one year - it froze so hard that by 11:00 the next morning it still sounded like breaking popsicle sticks when walking through it.

It hurt it pretty bad - killed the heads - they just turned white and mushy.

But also seen it rebound like you are saying - it retillered out low and then came back much stronger than any of the crop consultants thought it could...

Not to be a jerk or anything but what can you do about it if it does? cover the whole crop with a blanket? Up here in northern S.D. we havent lost a crop due to frost in the spring.

Doubt if it has even came out of the stool yet has it?

That winter wheat is some tought stuff. Really don't think a frost will even effect it.

We grew winter wheat for decades, freezes and thaws in the springtime and it doesn't hurt it a bit

No kiddin?
Here in extreme SE Kansas, our winter wheat was completely wiped out by a freeze in early April of last year. Depends on how far along it is.

It was jointed. This year's crop isn't anywere near as far along today as it was in early April last year. A freeze right now wouldn't hurt it at all.

My younger brother was hurting for hay last year (over sold when it was high) and put most of his cattle on his wheat (half a section) to try and squeak by. The cows grubbed it down good and one of his old timer neighbors gave him a lot a grief about how he didn't know what he was doing and how bad he was hurting his wheat. His wasn't jointed when the frost came. My brother had one of the few good wheat crops in his area, his know it all neighbor disked his under. Then wheat started to go up..... .

Southern Indiana 2007 early April frost/freezing - for 5 day period, got down to 23 one night. Most of the wheat got destroyed.

Most of the wheat here that was destroyed was destroyed with a spray coup, not the freeze. The people who let it come out and do what it could do were very happy they did not spray or disk what UK called destroyed.

We had some of that too. About 1/2 crop yield wise and with the good market price did OK. Some of it was flatter than a pancake and tough to combine, especially when doublecrop beans were needing planting. If we don't get those doublecrops in as soon as possible it costs us yields. Most was replanted in Corn and made @ 180 bushel/acre which was quite good considering the late drought.

What was left here made over trend. Don't know how far up in IN you are but I am 40 south of Evansville, guess you don't have to go far to see a big change in things.
