Hi folks,

I know there are variables, but what can you expect from wheat and/or barley? We have moderate temps and plenty of moisture. Fields are on high ground (no bottom land). I guess the high grain prices are really working on folks' greed hormone.

I've been renting 3 pieces of pasture (total about an acre and a half) and he has decided to plow it up and plant it. Can't see that he'd make more than I'm paying him for rent, especially with the work involved. Appreciate it if someone can give me a couple of numbers.

Thanks, Dave

Can't follow pasture with wheat. For top wheat yield you need to follow beans.

That would tickle me..... ..... ..... Another guy just plowed up about 15 acres that had some of the best hay just for spite. Like to see him take a big bite. Same guy that went and bought up all the hay he could find in the area a few years ago when it was so dry, then let it go to waste. All so the other farmers would have to pay more/travel farther to get any.
If I loose this piece (s), it's not the end of the world, just the principal.
Take Care,

Dave

If you're working up an old pasture and going right to wheat,I wouldn't expact much. Sod to wheat just isn't a good plan. My cousin warned me about that once but I did it anyway. He said I was about to learn an expensive lesson. I did.

I'd guess approximately 45 bu. per acre (for wheat), from your discription.

Prolly about right depending on the area and type of wheat. In central ND you can expect 40-50 bu spring wheat and 50-70 bu barley.

Spring wheat is down to the $10 range from the momentary high of $25. Feed barley is $5 with malting barley around $6.

Fuel is $4 gallon, nitrogen is $700 per ton, phosphate fertilizer is $1200 per ton.
Every input has gone up 2-300% in the last 1-1/2 years, so those "high" grain prices are gobbled up real quick.
Pasture takes darn little inputs to produce a crop of grass.
