Posted this on the JD board, just thought I'd see if anyone here has any ideas. Started putting 70 gas back together, Head is done, block bored out and new pistons and rings, crankshaft was turned and new main bearings. Got the crank in and found out I don't have a gasket for the left main bearing housing. I ordered new ones and thought I had one, but I put all the gaskets together, and there ain't one for that. If I wait till Monday and order a new gasket, it will be here Wednesday. Rather not wait that long, would like to get her back together while it's too wet to get in the field. Could I get away with making one if I can find some thin gasket material? The one for the right side in real thin paper gasket. Don't think I can use silicon to make one, there is a oil passage in the bearing housing, when it squeezed in, it would plug oil passage. Any ideas what I could use to make a new gasket? Gasket does betwen crankcase and bearing housing. Thanks, Chris

Just use regular gasket paper. Maybe you have some on the shelf, or go to town and buy some at a parts store. You adjust the end play with the flywheel, not the gasket.

Thanks for the replys. I have a new O ring to relace the old one. The flywheel is cracked beyond repair, will have to get a new taper-lok flywheel.Got to wondering if I could use some of that white butcher paper? Chris

I don't see why you can't cut one from a cereal box...coat it with shellac or permatex on one side. What kind of shape was the "O-ring" gasket in when you pulled the Rt main..?? Bet the flywheel side is not any better.. My 630 had lost a Rt side main because of that "O-Ring" seal..it cold-flowed into the oil passage and the Flywheel side only had an opening the size of a pencil lead...! It sure does PAY to pull the Mains on the 2-Cylinder tractors..!

Aside from the gasket situation. Use some new grade 5 or grade 8 bolts on the flywheel and torque WITH a torque wrench to 275lb ft with dry clean threads. You don't need a loose flywheel situation.
