I am wanting to flush out the radiator in my diesel tractor & did a little research on the website. I found that I need to use a replacement coolant that INCLUDES a DCA additive. Any recommendations on brands?

I tested regular antifreeze when mixed 50/50 with the test strips and it indeed showed I also needed to add the additive on my own. Get some test strips and mix some up and test it BEFORE you dump it in.

Please dont use that gold antifreeze, no matter whos name is on the bottle. Im not going to make any recommendation, since others will bash and wont listen, other than to tell you any good diesel rated, low or no silicate antifreeze will work fine, and you should really get a manual for the DCA amount to add. Too much can eat up waterpump seals and hoses.

Hi john,

Why wouldn't you use the Ford coolant? It's a diesel rated coolant with DCA but there's a problem?

What would be a good brand?

Check the DCA level in a fresh bottle of any flavor of the G06. You will find that, per Fords own spec, its barely within therange Ford recommends. Now in this gentlemans case, it may work fine in his tractor, for years.I have no experience with his tractor, nor do I know if IH even recommends a DCA for it, but IMO, theres better coolants for diesel engine. My personal preference for my PSD is the Rotella, since its better at holding the DCA level, contains no silicate, and is easy for me to get. I belive its made my the same people that make the FLeetrite, but I could have it backwards. Its been ye3ars since I made additives for about 10 antifreeze comanies, so my memeriy is somewhat lacking on the subject, and Im since further advances have been made since then.

Hello 7lazy7
Some diesel engines are equipped with a DCA screw on filter. You did not say how old the engine is.
The filter would be 4" round about4" high, and the hoses going into it would have 2 shut-off valves.
If you go with 100% anti freeze, you need to put an initial charge on DCA. Cummins was one of the engine company that used this system.Detroit Diesel used another product for the same purpouse and it was called NALCOOL 2000. It came in a quart container, and it usually took 2 of them for a class 8 truck engine.
Guido.

Hi 7lazy77,

You can buy the DCA additive seperate from NAPA as the Ford PSD uses DCA in there engines.

Ford also changed over to the "gold coolant" that contains DCA that may work for you BUT it is also known to cause leaking pump seals on engines not compatible with the gold coolant. It's called gold coolant as it's a yellow color.

When I looked for coolant for my IH-706D, the Ford dealer had the best price, $9/gal, for concentrate or 100% anti-freeze that needs to be mixed 50/50 with distilled water.
The other were brands were a 50/50 mix already but at $17/gal average. The Motorcraft brand was the only 100% anti-freeze I could buy here in AZ and I looked hard for other brands.
I haven't switched my IH-706D over too the gold coolant yet so I can't tell you if the pump seals will leak but that's what I bought it for.

Heavy Truck shops have precharged DCA Coolant on hand.

It is Vital to use DCA additive in your diesel engine.
