I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like what i just have. I have a 93 dodge 350 with a 5.9 cummins in it. in january I took the truck to a local aamco to have a clutch installed becasue i was so busy at the time. i wantede a rear seal put in also. well afetr about 2 months the rear seal started leaking again. so i took back to aamco and the said was blow by. i rerouted it and another aamco in another town said that it was the seal but i had to take it back to oriinal aamco. now they giving me the bs that the crank is moving 3/4 inch causing it to leak but everything is running straight. no unusual wear on belts or anything. and they told me that it is not leakin bad enough for them to deal with it. he shoewd me or tried to show me that crank was moving. he put a crow bar between block and balancer and of course the balancer moved it has rubber in it. everytime i had a question the repsonce i got was that the mechanic has 25 years of experience and said that all dieseld have oil leaks. any suggestions on what to do. whanks

If it has 3/4" play why did they work on it in the first place?

I don't know how the rear seal is installe don that engine, but I do know that on Ford's it's not at all uncommon for them to weep MOST of the time. It seems more prevelant on engines that do a lot of lugging.
The other question.... did they inspect the crank for a seal groove? What did they do about that? If they just put a new seal in place in the old groove then there is no reason to think that it wouldn't leak. That would require a speedi sleeve or move the seal out a bit to a new location on the crank.
Also, some engines will have a seal carrier that the seal is mounted in rather than mounting the seal directly in the block.... so if the leak was on the carrier and they didn't replace that gasket, it's still gonna leak....
Personally I would not let anyone near that engine that was trying to tell me that it had 3/4" of thrust in the crank and was still working OK. Me thinks you'd be hearing some serious noise by now if it didn't suffer from ventilated block syndrome already.

that mechanic has 25 years experience as a freakin' carpenter!
Get the OTHER AAmco to document on their invoice paper that the vehicle has a bad seal. Then, return it to the original, ask for the manager and demand satisfaction.

25 years experience doing what?

I would have extreme doubts that a tranny shop could seal this so it would hold. I'm sure you paid the same labor rate that a qualified shop would have charged. Look at your receipt in the fine print for the stated warranty.

Aamco is totaly wrong. They need to redo the seal. Check and see if your state has a Bureau of Automotive repair. If you do, turn it in to them. Years ago I had the wife's Mustang GT at the dealer for a recall on the emergency brake. Told them to look at the malfunctioning speedmeter when it was there. They told me it needed a new sending unit and charged $60.00 to diagnos it. They wanted $300.00 to fix it. Since I knew that wasn't the issue I declined the repair. I pulled the whole cluster and took it to a speedo shop. Cost a $100.00 to repair it. Worked fine for the next 7 years until we sold it. So I told the dealer I wanted a refund. They declined and told me never to come back again. I turned them into the state and they got fined and had to refund my $60.00. They also now have that issue listed on the state repair site.

John Deere two cylinder tractors never get more than a quarter inch of endplay in 50 years.

so, aamco is a SCHITT JOINT.

Go somewhere else.

In the early 70s, I was a service manager for Aamco. We only did transmission work. Guess times have changed. I do not know how the seal is constructed or how it is installed, but my guess is that it either WASNEN'T installed or installed incorectly. I would contact their main office, go to the top.

That is BS. If your crank has 3/4 end play you would have a lot more trouble than an oil leak!!!
