So i went out and spent the big bucks and got Magellan GPS for the truck. $300 and guess what you have to spend another $80 to get the updated maps and software to make it work, is this legal or Criminal.
I think its a Rip-Off myself If its brand new why does it have old software and why do I have to pay to get it updated.

I have one and love it. Recognizes all the right of way roads between fields etc. Mine was an elcheapo and had not sold for quite awhile and was a little outdated. Comsumer laws in Germany are pretty protective. Just had to call the service# and had software in the mailbox the next day. Before you spend a lot of extra $$. I'd call your service#, if that doesn't do it, return it and buy another. You may have got a freak.

I bought a Garmin street pilot for about $180 at Bass Pro. Worked right out of the box, its great.

A friend of mine works for an insurance company and lots of time on inspections has to do a quick drive by on maybe 12 to 15 houses in a 3 or 4 county area. She can generally punch in the addresses and get all of them done by 1 or 2 oclock. Her co-worker does the same thing with the folding map method. he get 4 or 5 a day.

And she just started doing field work, he has been doing it 20 years. The boss is gonna start looking at their output one of these days.

Until I take a trip to the Grand Canyon, uninhabited Alaskan wilderness, or some other absolutely Godforsaken remote wilderness, (like where Allen lives) I got absolutely no use for GPS. I got folding maps or mapquest on the computer.

How good are these systems out in the township grids when you are looking for a field to dump limestone in or make a delievery to a house when there might be only two or three houses to the mile? Armand

Iowa fire departments can only send fire reports to the state by internet--no other way accepted.

The original software was inexpensive. Was state wide sale package that the state purchased. Now every year we are supposed to send the software company $300.00 plus to update. Seems like a sweet deal for the software company.

It is called salesmanship.

First, it should work just fine right out of the box.

The only reason to do an update is to get the latest map. Obviously, they're going to try to sell you an update, but it certainly doesn't need one to function. Mine is two years old & I've never bothered to update the map. Unless you're in an area with a lot of new construction, why bother?

Think of it as buying a paper map. Would you replace the map every time something in the area it covers changed? If not, why should you update the electronic map. If I were going on a long trip, it might be worthwhile to have the latest info, in which case I'd spring for an update.

I suppose there could be software updates occasionally, but I would suspect those should be free. Reminds me, I should check & see if mine has the latest software.

Just use it as it came. Once you get used to having it, you'll use it a lot.

Keith

Got a Magellan Maestro 4000 last fall and it was ready to use out of the box .Paid 249.00plus tax at Sears.Ordered one on line a couple weeks ago for a friend $254.00 no tax no shipping and it also works great .I have never used the USB cable to connect it to my computer however and don't suppose I ever will. I got it to use in a vehicle. Mine is awesome.

Walt, I have a Garmin and have been very happy with it, but I did think the map was old. When I went to update the map I found out I had to buy the new one.

I did not feel it was fair for me to have to buy a new map because my 4 month old unit did not have a few streets that have been there for years. So I called Garmin, and their customer service people sent out the new map update at no charge.

My guess is Magellan will do the same thing for you. These things are very helpful, I think you'll enjoy it.

I bought a Tomtom a while back. It had an updated map available. I called them and they updated it online for free. I bet if you call the Magellan customer service # they`ll update you for free. You might have to verify your purchase date though. I think they all pretty much use the same mapping and satellites.

Walt- I have the exact same unit, bought it at Costco for about $230 over a year ago. It came fully loaded and it works great. Yells at me a lot less than the wife.

It should be loaded- the updates are only required down the road as hiway systems change, etc.
