Young Danica Patrick wins her first Indy Series race in the 3 yrs since entering Indy Car racing. So now they will change the rules to include the driver weight in the total minimum car weight. Young woman have unfair advantage over "man" because of lower weight. Oh yea , the girl wins so we change the rules. That is a class act if I ever saw one and oh , the timing is just spot on too. What's the matter , Foyt , your grand son can't win so you start complaining? Maybe he should use the "gym" more often. It's not like she won the last 40 races in a row. One race in three years!!! Can we spell "LITTLE MAN DISEASE"??? What will happen when she adds the weight to the car in just the right places and still wins?? Then they will say she has to place the added weight under the cockpit to be fair to the "fat boys". Like I said "sad day for racing".

Like her or not, and I do, she's given IRL a well needed shot in the arm. As far as I'm concerned, the IRL was killing itself off, and she brought a whole lot more fans to the events. The IRL needed and needs her. Even if she never won a race under Rahal, which might've happened, she lined the fans up for autographs (crowd draw), sponsors, and ticket sales. In my opinion, she’s the best of two worlds...she can drive, and she's very marketable. I took a look down from the tower at one the tracks for a 7:00PM autograph session, and it was her and Kanaan side by side sitting at a table. She had more folks standing in line, and I'd have to concede that he has far more wins and experience. She had the longer line though. She’s very good for IRL and racing in general. NASCAR wants her too, and if they don’t watch it with that Car Of Tomorrow, they’ll need “a her”. Fans tolerated the restrictor plate races, but I doubt that they’ll tolerate entire restrictor car bunched up racing forever and ever and ever. They didn’t with IRL. NASCAR’s flirtin with disaster, in my opinion.

Besides, Danica's some real eye candy too. Grin.

If I am not mistaken, NASCAR made some compensation for driver weight several years ago.
It all began when Jeff Gordon was winning several races and the opponents complained because he didn't weigh as much as the other drivers.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, thank you.

Nascar weighs car and driver , helmet, etc ,,race ready IRl weighs car only , therefore ,,lighter drivers have slight weight advantage.

I wonder if the helmet has to be on the drivers head during weigh in now, or just in the car ? On one of the racing talk shows, one of the retired nascar drives said they used to have a solid lead helmet in the car, painted team colors and correctly upholstered, just used for weigh in. ;-)

we had a lead roll of duct tape that would "accidentally" get left in the car when we went on the scales- weighed about 30 lbs

I'm pretty sure they are adding weight to her car this year. 35 lbs. I read. In any sport where big is an advantage over small that seems to be just fine. But in the rare instance where small is an advantage over big then it is percieved to be "unfair".

By the sounds of all that whining. Just put on a skirt, makeup and shave your legs then get a driving job. You would fit right in.

I'm surprised TOTAL weight wasn't already in the rules not just the car.In tractor pulls its all the weight on the tractor whether its the driver or part of the tractor.Only fair way to do it.

What's gender bias got to do with it. Danica is a woman, sure. So's Rosie O'Donnell.

I'm more into NASCAR than open-wheel racing, BUT I think it's wonderful that Danica Patrick won! Over in NASCAR, they're fretting because Dale Earnhardt Jr. hasn't won in 70 races; it took Danica 50 races to win her FIRST, so let her have her day in the sun! I think she'll bring more fans--translation: more money--to open wheel racing, as a lot of folks will show up to cheer for and against her...and the sport will be all that much better because of her success.

With Hornish and Montoya and Carpentier and Franchitti all running NASCAR, the odds of Danica Patrick winning the Indy 500 has increased exponentially...not anywhere near a sure thing [ask Lloyd Ruby fans about futility at the Brickyard], but notching that first win in the series should build some confidence in her entire organization.

A.J.'s day has passed; the new generation of racers are coming of age...and one of them just happens to be a woman. Deal with it, A.J. Time marches on.

Hmmmm. Seems everything was fine until she won. Now they cry foul. Doesn't surprise me at all. I could share some stories about being given a definite cold shoulder because some males (there's a difference between males and men) thought I was trespassing on "men only" areas.

P.S. There's a difference between being female and being a woman, too.
