The service engine soon light on my daughters 99 Olds cutlass comes on as soon as you put the car in gear. If you shut the car off, and then restart the car, the light will stay off until you put it in gear again. I stopped at NAPA and had them throw a code reader on it. It shows no codes stored in the computer. I'm stumped.

Go to advance auto parts. They have a scanner that is on wheels and reads codes STORED in the computer - NOT just when the CEL is on.

If the check engine light comes on, there will be a code stored in memory. Depending on the scan-tool, they may not have been able to see pending or history codes. I`d have someone else scan it. Good luck BW
