Allen, I have an IH 1066 that won't charge I don't get any power at either of the wires going to the alternator except for the one that goes to the battery is hot. Shouldn't I have some power at the F (field wire).
Walt

PS anyone know where I can get a service manual for less that the cost of new car.

the number one little spade is the "key" wire that turns the thing on the number two is the sensor wire you can tempary jump BOTH spade wires to the large post wire if it dont charge then it aint gona

For sure,

Can't tell ya which is which without going out and looking at the darned tractor, but one of those little spades "watches/senses" the system so as to regulate the output voltage.

The other little spade is what turns the whole she-bang off and on via the key switch.

I takeit we are talking internal regulated Delco. Looking at the alternator from the back you have three terminal s left to right. Two 1/4 inch blades, the plug in the side of the alternator that plugs into the regulator, and one stud. With the key OFF you sould have 12 volts on the left terminal, 0 volts on the center, and 12 volts on the stud. When you turn the key on you should have 12 volts on all three terminals. I work on a IH with an alternator proble something like you are having. There was damage to the wiring harness hidden by the oil filters.

Kent I think you could correct I have zero voltage on both of the small wires to side of the alternator. My buddy went and put a new alternator on it before checking with me I hope he didn't waste his money.

Your problem IS the no voltage on the two small terminals. With the ignition key off, whether gasoline engine or diesel, you NEED 12 volts on the two outside terminals of the three terminals. When you turn on the ignition switch to start the engine, again whether gasoline or diesel, you need voltage on ALL THREE terminals for the slternator to work. You only need a diode or resistor in the switch line if the engine is battery ignition as the ignition can be backfed from the alternator causing the engine NOT to die when the ignition switch is turned off. The resistor is rated at 10 ohm 7 1/4 watt normally found in the wiring loom of the GM vehicals that the alternator came on. I have used 10 ohm 10 watt resistor from Radio Shack. The diode is ok to. NOT NEED on a diesel. Find a 70's era automotive repair manuel. Chilton's or Motor's should have a wiring diaghram of the 3 terminal internal regulated Delco alternator in their general repair section on alternators I have used this alternator to retrofit a divers number of machine from generator to alternator: 4 C-II Gleaner combimds, 88 Oliver, MT John Deere, 8n Ford. The 88 Olivar did not have an ignition switch to switch on the altenator so I used a HOBBS switch in the oil pressure line to energize the alternator. No resistor or diode needed.

I fthis is a delco 10si, then #2 spade needs 12v .. and can be looped tot he charge lug.. #1 needs switched 12v.. preferably with a idiot lamp or diode in line with it to protect the alternator from damage in case the chargge line comes off ( and for ignition isolation on gasser machines ).. install diode with stripe (cathode) to alternator.. 3a/200piv is good.. 1a/50piv will be good enough.. 1N5408 diodes is fione..radio shack part number 276-1661 will work.

Theres a resistor down by the regulator that might need checked.
