Yesterday I sold the last of the hay to a lady with two boys 12 and 10, great kids they jumped right in an helped Mom load that pickup. When all was finished They swung on the rope from the cieling joist. I let them drive my Big Case LA back into the barn, the little one sat in the seat and older boy helped him steer the big rig. I handled the clutch for them. They went away two very happy Boys. Makes me want to get a couple for myself.

My 4 yr old great grandaughter and 2 yr old great grandson ride in the tractor with me most every day as I put out hay. They spent this afternoon helping me tear down some old hog panels so we can build a wing fence to guide the cattle into the loading pen.

sounds like a fun day, LOL. I think the first time i drove a tractor was when i was 8-9. I still remember that, it was the summer my uncle killed his third truck-i can remember him and his hired help standing over it trying to fix it. He ended up with a new one, LOL.

I was riding along in a big old ford 7700 spreading and i was asking the dude questions about how it worked, and he musta got tired of listening to me, and he just asked me if id ever driven a tractor, and i said no, and he hopped up and told me to sit down. My friends dad also had a farmall H and i remember driving around on that thing. For some reason i remember staking in bales for erosion control, he was standing in a wagon behind the tractor directing me.

That's a wonderful thing you did for the young fellas.I am sure they will remember it.My two sons ,age 6 and 3, each have their own tractor.I take them on rides and they steer. What happy expressions on their faces.Hope when they get older they still have the passion for it.

Great experience for the kids. One of my proudest moments was when my youngest was in engineering college, professor was trying to explain center of gravity. He used felling a tree as an example, said "now none of you have done this, but....." My son said "I have, lots of times, we heated with wood". One thing to know a theory, quite another to know how to use it. And all of my grandkids, girls included Nancy, love their tractor rides. Not too many kids these days can say my grandpa is a farmer, even if it's part time.

My girls are spoiled rotten growing up on the farm- and so are their freinds, who always seem to be over.
This past weekend, we had 11 inner city 8-9 year old kids out for a church sponsored day at the farm. Taught 'em how to fetch and lead a horse, how to groom one, saddle it up and ride a bit in the arena. Then we went up to the cemetary and had a bon fire cook out- hot dogs and 'smores. We finally did a hayride around the place and they got to see and touch the goats and chickens and- like Walt- we let 'em up in the hayloft to build forts. Spent about 4 hours with 'em.

Stuck all of 'em back on the bus happy and exhausted- and I can't wait to do it again.

We are stewards of this lifestyle- and we need to TRY to expose the unfamiliar to it, and soften some hearts to our maker.

Good for you. There is nothing wrong with letting youth operate old tractors as long as it is done in a safe and controled manner. I let my 9 and 7 year old boys drive the JD H that I bought for them. Most of us drove our first tractor at a very early age and look, we survived!

Way to go. None of us realize how some small act of kindness might give a kid an interest. I remember a few years ago trying some newly tied flies on a pond full of small bluegills. A grandfather and his 3 or 4 year old son came by. We spent the next 15-20 minutes--until Grandma came to get the boy for his bath--with me casting and setting the hook and the boy pulling in the fish. I still don't know who had the most fun.

Take a boy to do anything any chance you get.

Hey, guys! Remember there are more and more girls driving tractors and running farms. Lets not make this exclusive to boys. There are too many family farms hanging in the balance. Wish my dad had been able to put me on a tractor many, many years ago. He took me and my sister hunting with him once (I think that"s all mom would allow) and I"ve never forgotten that outing with my dad even though I was maybe 4 at the time.

You're right Nancy- my 11yr old daughter just LOVES anything to do with the ranch, whether it's tractors, horses, whatever...she always wants to be right in the thick of things! Even moreso than my 14yr old son. He's a good helper too but I think sometimes he's rather be in the house messing with his electronics stuff....I still take him with me alot to do various things, and after the initial moaning about having to shut off his computer, he invariably winds up enjoying himself.

Way ta go Walt !!! If maybe a few more of our generation would show a little more interest in the younger one, the country and world would be a whole lot better off.

By the way,
We're going to try to make it to Brooks again this year..hopefully with Shawn & Sheana's Farmall SC in tow.

Again keep up the great public relations with the younger kids!!!

My 8 and 12 year olds love moving small squares, feeding the cows/calves etc. They used to fight over who got to pick eggs when we first moved here, then it became something they had to help with and it isnt so fun. We dehorned 4 5-600# steers yesterday, they dont think to much of that. I commend you for taking the time to share your tractor for them, they'll remember that the rest of their life.

Walt,
That is great! I have a 5 year old grandson that ask me last night if it will be warm enough this weekend for a tractor ride. It is great to have a younger generation to pass our love of old iron along to, most don't want it if it is not a video game on a TV.

You had some fun Walt. Reminds me of the time my uncle let me clean out the chicken coup and haul away the accumulated chicken shut on a wagon behind his AC 'G'. Man, at 9 years old I was on top of the world. I don't think the chicken shut smelled a bit as I certainly didn't notice it.

Wait for the (rest of the) "hand-wringers" to come out in force; don't you think they'd have been much better off sitting in front of the TV with whatever the current video game is??

That's because they see the legal and financial nightmare of this now "overcivilized, overlegalized, overconnected/overwatched, and outright paranoid" society.
ex. When I bought my farm, my father bought a piece nearby. Developers bought everything around him and he wanted a backup just in case he got driven out. I secured/insured mine immediately, Dad being an old ex-farmer from the 50's said farmers have to take care of themselves and did nothing but setup for a tenant to farm it. Just depends on the time you grew up in I guess. Companies and the legal system have us all gamed.
