I'm considering looking into the background of my wife's(soon to be ex) boyfriend. I'm not typically the nosy type, but if this guy is going to be spending time around my kids, I'd like to know about him. Has anyone used these searches? Suggestions as to the best one?

Suggestions and opinions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Anthony

Hello MeAnthony.
If you need to know this guy's back ground I would suggest you hire some agency and to have them do a back groud investigation. A background check will be superficial at best. It may cost more but it will be complete. One company I know that does this is callled U.S.I.S. Do I search and see what they have . I don't think they are cheap, but I know that produce excellent results.
Guido.

Talk to your local cop. The court records he pulls up on his computer are online, he can give you the address. I used it to find out my ex-wouldbe-girlfriend had a string of 3 (now 4) DUIs, an officer-assault charge, and was ordered to do time in a mental health unit. That woke me up pretty quick to her not being the right gal for me.

Good Lord. She sure sounds like an exciting time out and more. She didn't like the color purple, did she? Purple everything? Years back when I lived in Illinois, I bought this house that I fixed up. No matter where I was working on it, I could tell that everything seemed to be painted purple at some point and mentioned it to the neighbors. They told me that some years before some crazy lady and her husband, they said his name was Shorty lived there, and she loved purple. Purple dresses, eye shadow, cars, walls, grass, even her hair. Loved purple. Said she was nuts. Said she'd take a kitchen chair, set it on top of the picnic table, and sit on it wearing purple dresses, smoking cigarettes from those real long cigarette holders like she was some hillbilly movie star. Said she even stabbed that guy Shorty a few occasions too because she was nuts. Now here's the scary part. Said the last they heard of her, she moved to Iowa. I'm not joking. I don't recall what they said her name was, nor do I know your near Mrs. miss, but if she was into purple, I'd say you dodged a bullit or knife. I didn't live there too long after hearing that. Was concerned she might come back in the middle of the night and mistake me for that guy Shorty.

But...did sound like a wild night on the town though. "Yeeee Hawwww...she's driving". HaHahaha.

In NY for example you can check the division of criminal justice NYSDJCS sex offender data base and the dept of corrections DOCS data base, for free, very simple to use, your state should have similar data bases, the conviction descriptions are brief, but sufficient.

Realizing that some or many people may have a less than desirable criminal background, and have or have not made changes for the better, is not something you'll find in the data bases, still have to read that person and make a character assessment. Granted, you may see a pattern or history of things that may alert you to certain things, nothing wrong with getting some information on someone even if a gut instinct tells you.

Your kids will hopefully be educated as to what would be unacceptable behavior by an adult and what to do about it, this is important regardless.

I had a real dud working at our horse farm and he was dealing oxycontin, + just being a real pain in the @ss, heard he had outstanding warrants, one day a sherriff followed me into the yard, and he went and hid in a vehicle, something was up, the sherriff saw the retgistration sticker improperly placed on a car I was driving, just a routine traffic stop, but when that guy went and hid, I knew something might be up. I very easily checked with 3 agencies in 3 states, NY, NH & VT to see if any outstanding warrants were on the guy, hoping to see him carted off, as I was going to probably do something stupid he was really getting on my nerves. Nothing turned up, but he was still hiding something. I finally got rid of him without any incident, told my father what a mistake that was to not check people, I left our place because of people like this, very hard to hold back, if I was younger, this guy would have been hospitalized. I turns out, the area near our place has a real high sex offender population, NYS Trooper told me this ! We are near Saratoga NY, so I did not think there were a lot of bad people around, wrong ! We have kids for lessons etc. I told him you have to check these people and make copies of their ID and other information, not like it was in the past.

For starters.. check out anything that is on public record.

You can usually hit your local clerks of the court's website and search his name and see what he's had done as public record. This usually includes traffic and civil cases, as well as criminal dispositions byt he court. In many states you can also search the sheriffs office website and lookup archive and current inmate data and see if he has been arrested.. these are all free searches of public info..

Anthony,
What state do you live in. Most states have gone to an online data base for offenders. You will need to have first and last name for sure. Don"t hesitate to ask any law enforcement officer, they will tell you what they can. My concern is something about this guy made you think to look into him more and expierence has taught me follow the gut instinct. Feel free to shoot me a personal email and I will see what I can do to help you out.

I would suggest hiring a licensed private detective. Lots of them have subscriptions to databases and might be able to find out all sorts of interesting things. They also should know what is and what isn't legal, as far as snooping. Since many private detectives are retired law enforcement officers, they also might have good contacts among still active officers.

Good luck, and don't get yourself in trouble!

Find you and officer you know. Ask him to run the name and date of birth if you got it. Just explain what is going on. But beware! If that subject is wanted for something bad right now. The officer must know where he can be located right away for an arrest are he has to answer to someone above him about the check. Remember this. Just cause in the past maybe someone got themselves in trouble and did a small time in county or state jail years back. Does not make them a bad person today. Many do change in life for the good!

----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -

It's against the law for a LEO to run a criminal record history information for a noncriminal investigation. Its misuse of public funds and an invasion of privacy.

However it is legal for an individual to run their own multistate criminal background check. We do it with every employee we hire. The criminal check is about $60.

You are absolutely correct. It is illegal for a Officer to make an NCIC inquiry for any other purpose then offical police business. Many officers have lost their jobs doing friends a favor of a "background check" by running a check through NCIC. Everytime a license plate, SS# or name is entered into the system, the system records the inquirer's info. It is not an anonymous system, it keeps track of who makes an entry.

The Sheriff of Shawnee Country (Topeka KS) lost his job for running "private" NCIC checks. Essentually the county prosecuter gave him the option to quit or be prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law, but then the State stepped in and hammered him good.

A lot of police officers don't realize its a "big deal" until it blows up in their face.

Just don't do anything illegally. It's bad enough to not be able to see your kids it will be worse if you can't see them period. Talk to your lawyer before considering anything invasive.

Do a search of him on myspace or some of the other networking sites. Alot of people will create site there and post pics of themselves in a green cloud of smoke and such. Totaly free and worth a look. I have heard of some people get'n thier kids back from an ex after find'n pics of drink'n and drive'n and such on these sites.
There are alot of sites that will give you a full report on some one for a little money on your credit card, but I have never used any of them.
Good luck.
Dave

Depending on what state you're in the information might be available on the internet. In Missouri, all court information except for juveniles is online. Other states have varying degrees of sophistication.

There are online places that will give you everything you want on the guy for a relatively small amount of money, too.
