The wife and I are going to look at a 1947 JD A. She has wanted a older tractor since her dad sold his years ago. Sounds like its in good shape, rebuilt engine, bored .045 over. We will use it to haul a manure spreader and haul hay wagons.

Is the over bore anything to be concerned about?

Anything special to look for?

Thanks
CJK

Just got back. It looks to be in good condition to me but I dont know squat about A's. Tin was pretty good with the hole cut out for the muffler. Paint faded and a little rust. It started right up and sounded like any other 2 cyl Ive heard at shows. No obvious fluid leaks. I did not drive it but everything appeared to work except the headlights. Rear pto made a little noise, guy said it was cold oil. ?? It was in the 30s here in Wisconsin. Tires have good tread but weather checked, not real bad. The rear rims were stamped steel and not original, supposed to be from another A but color is wrong. Repainted? He does have the original cast hubs, not sure on the rims. New radiator, battery and starter. He wants $1800 for it.

What do you guys think?? He seemed pretty set on his price.

How much for a paint job? Nothing fancy, but not a rattle can or brush job.

Had a 47 A once, used it seriously, went through engine over haul. Repeat what everyone else said, including Allan's comments. ALSO, drive it and check gears. Drive it in high gear and check to see if there is steering wobble. Probably will be, but it's not the end of the world. Check for oil leaks around the steering pedestal.

Check for loose fylwheel, clutch driver disk, and look really close at the bottom of the block and cyl. head for evidence of cracks. These seem to be very common problems on that model.

Try cranking it over with the compression release closed and see if it has good compression, Look for excessive smoke or blowby behind the belt pully or flywheel. Check for excessive end play in the crankshaft. Look for oil leaks in the roll-a-matic if it has one and oil leaks at the rear axel seals. Drive it and listen for excessive gear noise in the transmission. You might also ride the brakes and check for power. While your driveing it, make sure the front wheels don't wobble and the rear rims aren't bent. Looker over good....rw

Cuss me if ya want,

But, if you're looking for a good functional tractor, I’d sure be for getting a sworn/notarized affidavit that it didn’t come from the big “collector” sale of late.

Those junkers are gonna be floatin' around the market for the next 5 years until they finally find their way back to another bone yard.

Just my opinion,

Allan

What Allan said! Also find an expert to take with you. Even if you have to pay him or buy him lunch etc. This is for your wife , remember! You can't afford to screw up on this one!!!! Seriously , there are a ton of them out there. Shop till ya find a NICE one , it won't cost you $500 more than a money pit will.

Back when these tractors were the farm workhorses, they were commonly overhauled every few years. Every second or third overhaul you needed a new block. The .045 overbore means the block wasn't worn that bad.

The 1947 models were the first with a fully shielded flywheel, the new-style steel frame, and square rear axle. Power steering was not a factory option, and the Power-Trol Hydraulics and the PTO were transmission-driven (not live nor independent). Roll-O-MAtic was a neat option to have.

Must be a prototype to have a square rear axle in 1947.
