i have been hired by a local sign shop to remove vinyl decals off of 25 stainless steel tanker trailers. aerosol gasket remover works fine for lifting the decal off, but there is s film of glue left that is really hard to get off. i have tried most name brand products ( goo gone oops, etc) none seem to work that great does anybody have any ideas. these are large decals and it takes me about 20 hours to do 1 trailer.
thanks

I have used WD40 or rubbing alchohol with good success. Both work good without being dangerous or caustic.

We were told to use WD 40 to remove the decals from our out of service vehicles. Can't say it worked -- never tried it.

To remove the glue I use a product called (d-Limonene). I get it from Greenway Chemical Company Knoxville,TN. 1-800-258-5829. Apply it with a pump sprayer, allow it to sit for 1-2 minutes and the glue will wash off with soap and water and or a pressure washer, preferably a hot water washer. Make sure and wash it completely off of the vehicle because when the d-limone evaporates the adhesive will still be sticky. d-limonene evaporates quickly and water will neutralize it. Decal removal, DO NOT USE A PROPANE WEED TORCH! If you heat the decal too hot the glue will set and become very difficult to remove. I do not like a heat gun either. I use a hair dryer, rule of thumb is if you cannot hold your hand on the metal you have too much heat. The best removal I have done was in direct sunlight 80+ degrees the decals and most of the adhesive came off together. I would like to watch a professional remove the graphics off of a Half Million Dollar Bus to obesrve his methods. I have been told that they use heat lamps. I have not found an easy method.

we bought some decal remover and adhesive remover from the same company

vinyl off - penetrates the vinyl and releases the glue ..... . google vinyl off to find it

i saw their add in a truck mag and ordered a sample, then a full bottle. used it yesterday as a matter of fact. works good, but as others have said heat makes whatever you use work better. temp started dropping yesterday and we had to stop.

Plain old rubbing alcohol will easily remove all traces of the decal adhesive and will not harm the finish and will not harm you unless you deliberately inhale the fumes. It's pretty darn inexpensive also.

I need to add that you just pour it onto a shop rag and then start wiping. Be generous with the alcohol.

3M makes an adhesive remover that works well. We sometimes use a steam/hot water pressure washer to remove graphics, when it works it takes the residue and the sticker. Hard work, good luck. Dave

If you want to get them off fast there's a product called Chisel and I think it's made by Loctite. It's in a spray can and you need to use rubber gloves. I think it was made to remove gaskets. It will remove paint but won't harm the metal. I used it for years on removing gaskets on Juki machines and it'll take epoxy paint right off to the metal. Just spray it on and wait for it to start to bubble and blister up. Then wipe it off.Glue and all. Best I've ever used.

Try a product called Goof off. It takes the glue off of tape that has the fiber strands in it.

Trick is to remove the adhesive with the decal. Heat! In the sun. Big torch. If the trailer isn't insulated, heat the inside. Whatever is takes. Use sharp plastic scrapers. good luck

Try using a product called PrepAll. I got mine in a gallon can from CarQuest. NAPA or other automotive supply store should have it. If I remember correctly, the can has a mostly blue label. Put some in an aerosol spray can for easier application. You probably will not get the stainless behind the signs to look like the rest of the tank as the other bigger area has been exposed to the sun and the elements for too long of time. Good Luck!

Not sure whether you have it there or not, but we have a product called "prepsol". Is a solution to clean surfaces before spray painting. Is very good for removing the film of glue, and doesn't damage the paint.

Try using a heat gun to soften the decal before you try removal ( it loosens the glue ).

Steeltracs has it right. A heatgun will release the adhesive and it will come off with the sticker. We re-logoed a fleet of vans and that is how the sign company did it . And pretty quickly too. Might have to use something REAL agressive to remove just the adhesive. MEK or Toulilene.

I agree with both these guys. thats how they put em on to go over rivits etc. if you do that tho, just dont scorch paint if you are using an industrial heat gun wich I'm sure you do, or will need.

Xylene will do it but use in a well ventilated area.
