Rare to me. In installing valve seat inserts in this head I broke thru the water jacket before I was as deep as the insert was thick. I have it bored out and ready for an insert that will be pressed in and fix the problem. It was a supprise though. Thought some would like to know about this.

It will look better when it is done. I should have took a picture of it before I started. Valve were rusted in, seats were deep pit rusted, the exhaust ports were burned/washed out on both ends and it looked like some one had taken a hammer to face. A face cutter in the CNC with three setups, a fourth setup to bore the ports, a few minutes with a boat stone, a little time with an air tool and she looks like it can be saved. Add valve guides and valve seat inserts and she will cackle more than new.

Been there and done that too. I had a "rush job" one time on a slant 6 that was used as an industrial engine. I had 11 of the 12 seats in. Next one I also found the water jacket. Also on a Case diesel head one time. Called "core shift. Did you ever do any 6.2 engines? You need to use a real thin seat on those. Looks like an intake there in your picture, how deep was the counterbore? What kind of seat cutter do you have? J.

I had the stop set at .160 and the opening into the water jacket was at .074. I had a .250 insert and thought I could seal it with the thicker insert. No way. I bored on down so I can cover the hole. I know it is not a problem that will cause a problem just have to turn up an insert next week. If I can find a cast iron pipe I would like to turn it down. I will probly end up making it out of prehard 44 H 13 tool steel. I use that in the tool shop for mold inserts. It is bar stock and will take a bit more time because of having to bore out the center, cast iron pipe just needs the outside turned and a reamer run thru the center.

The counter bore cutters are carbide mandrel guided to the valve guides.
