I have seen some IH tractors with "Hydro" on them. What is Hydro?

Great for loader work, snow blowing, baling, other work where infinite speed is a plus.

Suck more fuel - hydro is not near as efficient as gears so forget about plowing or heavy tillage; and more $$$ to fix when they break. Folks like them, so ya kinda have to be suspicious when you find one for sale, how wrecked is it..... .

They used a combination of a variable piston pump AND a variable piston MOTOR ahead of the gear transmission to give a wide range of speed control in the forward and reverse directions with the use of a single speed control lever, much like a "hydro" garden tractor.

I beleive only the pump is variable. The motor is fixed.

You are WRONG, hydraulic oil breath!

The motor AND the pump are variable displacement on the TRACTORS.

You can see the two gimbaled swashplates in this drawing, which pivot on tapered roller bearings, and there is a servo for BOTH the pump swashplate AND the motor swashplate.

They had a fully hydrostatic transmission with two or three ranges.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I totally understand hydrostatics, I just did not know they had them on the IH tractors.
