OT catalitic converters in California

I just thought of something I better get figured out before I leave to go to California to get my 23 Olds grain truck. My Dakota tow vehicle does not have a converter on it, had to pull it off due to clogging. I just use it locally usually and it is not an issue here, but if I get on the road out west particullary in California how much trouble can they cause if I get checked. I am cutting it close on just the gas cost (and what $ I have)and if I have to put a converter on I may have to walk the last 500 miles? Is it something to worry about out west?

SO how heavy is this truck your going after that a Dakota can handle it, must not be much od a truck.

The truck isn"t real heavy even though it is rated as a 1 ton. Original shipping weight without the cab and bed is about 2200. with bed and cab about 3100. They had heavy frames and rear ends and wheels, but little 4 cyl engines and small transmissions. Sheet metal is minimal with just fenders hood and cowl. The dakota is a V8 so power isn"t a problem and the trailer has brakes. Hauled much bigger loads with it and it did ok.

Gotta a question. Is ths the same olds truck that is listed in Hemmings this month? It looks like a good rare truck at a fair price.

Yes it is! Been looking for one of those for a long time and it will like sitting next to a 24 Olds touring car in the barn. The guy selling it has a NICE original 28 GMC also.

Maybe I missed it, but what state is your Dakota currently registered and inspected in? If it is legal in your home state, I wouldn't expect CA would be able to find too much fault with it.

I would just make sure all the lights work, everything is properly registered, and the load is securly anchored per the various codes of the states you are traveling through. Good luck.

I have lived in California before. Unless as said above. Your vehicle smokes and easly seen or loud in sound. You will have no problem. It can be a problem if you are inspecting it for tags there.

IF you are trailering it. Besure you are using proper tie downs on it. That can get you attention at times.

I thought it was a FED speck that the converters could not be removed. You are breaking the law wherever you live. Dont have money to replace then how will you explain that you are driving to CALIF to buy an old truck?

I usually don"t drive the Dakota but this is a long trip and it gets twice the mileage as my 71 Chevy 3/4T. $$ wise it is just bad timing on my part as this 23 Olds grain truck is being sold dirt cheap and is restored and if I hadn"t already sent the deposit it would have sold the first week. They were only built from 1919-1923 and are pretty rare birds. I collect Oldsmobile hit and miss engines and have a few cars from the 20s - the early 70s. My rent check won"t be here till next month and Uncle Sam wants his check before I go. OUCH!

For the entire time I have lived in CA (25 years) I haven't heard of any problems. As long as it isn't totally obvious you shouldn't have a problem. If you were going to smog it then you would have a problem since there is a specific question about whether or not the converter has been tampered with or removed. However, since you are just traveling through you should be fine. I wouldn't sweat it and if you do run into problems just play dumb.

The only trouble you may have with the smog issue is if you are going to register your vehicle in California. I think the inspection stations are more interested in safety. I don't travel much in the state of calif, but I have seen only one inspection station,between San Diego, and Los Angeles and it says no pickups. At the border they check for any fruit comming in to the state. Local police, or Highway Patrol may pull you over if they see something wrong with your load. The Higwway patrol has a roving pickup in my area that is set up for vehicle inspections, but again I believe safety is their main concearn. I herd somewhere in the state they were going to install a sniffer on the side of the road so when you passed it the unit it will check a sample of your exhaust and if you failed the test the owner would get a ticket in the mail. I don't see how that could happen with all the vehicles on our roads. Welcome to Calif. we need the money to support more bums. Where are you going in Calif? Stan

I would be very surprised if you would have any trouble from police unless your pickup is extremely loud. It would be very doubtful that police officers would ever look under your pickup unless they have reason to believe that you are trying to smuggle something like drugs.

On the other hand, you probably would not want to sell the pickup to someone living in California, since they undoubtedly would have to have it inspected for emissions. Without the catalytic converter it is doubtful that it would pass the sniffer test and would not pass the visual exam. The buyer would be forced to buy a replacement converter, which could be an expensive repair, in order to get it to pass the emissions test.

I wouldn't worry a bit. Just take care of my business in California, drive normally and legally and get back home where things are a little less restrictive. Good luck!
