Ok guys I think I have a major problem. My 94 GMC 4.3 single cab automatic has been getting some terrible gas mileage (i think). I have never trusted the fuel gage since I got it 2 months ago. But I have always thought that something is wrong. So I decided to check, I had 1/2 a tank exactly on the gauge drove it until it is about a hair I mean a hairs hair over the 1/4 mark, and got about 70 miles. Another thing is the book says I got a 36 gallon tank and the guy I got it from said it was about a 24 or 25 gallon one. So even if I have a 24 gallon tank that is about 11 mile to the gallon a 36 gallon tank it is about 8 mile to the gallon, my buddy says give it a tune up & make sure it is shifting into overdrive. I dont think a tune up is it. How I drive..40-55 mph never constant speed for more than 5 miles mostly rural roads but a few back roads. What do you think, I am very mechanically knowledgeable but..... .thanks
I think I asked something similar to this earlier but now I think something is wrong, the truck does run a drive real good but anything to check??

Wouldn't the VCM be throwing a check engine light on the dash due to too high/uncontrolable O2 sensor voltage

As mentioned before, this engine (Vin code Z) has a nasty habit of losing the gaskets in the fuel pressure regulator (TBI) and the causing the engine to run very rich and fuel mileage to plummet. It should be getting 16-20, but when this gasket fails, you see 6-10 or worse. Tlak also mentioned this earlier.

As previously stated. You can not calculate mileage form a vehicles fuel gauge.
I carried a five gallon jug of fuel in my Sierra and ran it dry on purpose. When that gauge says E, it isn't kidding.
Adding 5 gallons to a truly empty 20 gallon tank took the gauge up to exactly 1/2 full.

I've got a 4.3 in an 87, and it is HORRIBLE about EGR issues- driveability and gas mileage plummets when the EGR cruds up. Its a TBFI motor too- but I don't know what the EGR is like on the later model. If it's got it, pull it apart and clean it.

When Chloe-baby starts complaining about buying gas, I know it's time to pull the camino's EGR apart

This last truck I bought in 1999. It's a 2000 model. Every time I get gas, I write down the miles on the odometer, how much the gas cost per gallon, how many dollars worth I bought and how many gollons I get. Been doing that right from day one. I usually add up two pages when I figure my mileage. Then write that(mileage) at the top of the page.

what is your mileage? My '00 has 6.0 motor & gets 13.8 empty on Interstate

I've got a Ford F-250 with the V-10, 3.73 gears in the rearend, auto trans w OD, 2-wheel drive. It gets an average of 12.5 mpg.

I have a 93 Chevy long bed, single cab, 4X4, and it has a 34 gallon tank, don"t know what the books says but it died one time pulling into the gas station, and I put 34.somthing gallons in it. The gauge is just in the ball park. Mine will run 75 miles with out come"n off full and the lower the tank gets the faster the needle moves, 34 gallon tank but ti only takes about 5 gallons to make the gauge go from 1/4 to 1/2. To figure mileage, don"t go by the gauge. Do like Eric said fill it up, drive 100 miles, fill up again. If it takes 10 gallons to fill it back up you are geting 10 mpg. 8 gallons=12.5, and so on.

Good luck, Dave

I have a 94 Chev. sheyenne single cab, two wheel drive and the tank holds 34 gal according to my book. At the speeds you are going you will probably never get better mileage because your overdrive isn't kicking in at long enough periods. You are getting in town mileage and that will be closer to ten or twelve if your lucky.

The gauges are only approximate. Some vehicles use a quarter tank before the needle comes off full. Others may have a quarter tank left when the needle shows empty.

Fill it up, write down your odometer reading. The next time you fill up, write down the odometer reading. Now figure you gas mileage. Because different gas stations' pumps are set differently, more readings will give you greater accuracy. For most purposes those 2 readings will tell you what you want to know.

The tires are oem size.

Maybe the whole problem is the kind of driving I do.

I drive mostly

Short trips under 5-45min usually less than 1/2 hour.

Its unusual if I dont stop or change speeds with in 10 miles

I drive between 40 & 60 mph, never constant especially on these roads changing from 40-50 a few time a mile is not uncommon.

I'm 16 years old and am the only kid that I know that drives like they should and have never done anything stupid in this truck. truck has never seen 65 (me and a buddy had a bad rollover accident which we walked away from, going 40mph.) We were driving safe and responsible, car went over the center line arround a slight turn he got scared put it in the grass and fish tailed it.

It is throttle body injection, I know its not a real good estimate, I have driven it daily this week. with past calculations I have never come up with more than 10 mpg, but dont do long drives to check the mileage. I'm just asking for things that could be wrong. Not things to increase my fuel or stuff like that you guys have made some good points though, keep 'em coming, you guys are the smartest i know

You'll have the big tank if it's a long bed and the small one if it's a short bed.

Some things to consider:

If the tires and wheels are not original (are oversize), the speedometer and odometer need to be recalibrated. Otherwise you could be driving a lot more miles than are indicated. Check your odometer over a measured mile.

The transmission needs to shift into overdrive and the torque convertor needs to lock up for best mileage. That won't happen until the transmission has warmed up and you're going at least 45 mph. Short trips or driving below 45 isn't going to give you good mileage.

Check out your brakes to see if you have a hot caliper. You could have a dragging brake.

Chances are your fuel gauge isn't accurate. Top off the tank, drive at least 200 miles then refill to the top. That will give you a decent average.

If you actually are getting 8 MPG, that WOULD be awful. I had a 94 AWD Astrovan with a 4.3 and it only got 13MPG with "around town" driving, and maybe 18 MPG on a long flat highway.

I think to need to figure what your fuel milage actually is - before looking for problems. With your 4.3, it could be throttle-body injected, or central-port-injected. With the latter CPI - with VIN-code W trucks - they are known for breaking fuel lines under the intake manifold and then becoming gas hogs. If throttle body - and it seems to be running good, the O2 sensor is the first thing I'd check out. With a bad sensor, it can run perfect but have fuel mileage drop 20-30%.

Gas gauge is non linear. You can drive 60-80 miles on full before it starts to drop. You also have 4-5 gal on empty as a reserve. Fuel pump is in the tank and is cooled/lubed by the fuel, driving on low tank causes extra wear.

Fill it up, drive your miles, fill it up again. Do the math.

I find the better mileage on premium fuel more than offsets the extra cost. I keep a running log on the pick up and can see in heart beat when it drops off.

I will pick up 4-5 mpg more running on a trip, cold starts really hurt the efficiency.

Run synthetic in engine and transmission to gain 2-3 mpg.

Well for starters that's not a very accurate way to estimate gas mileage. Fill it up, drive it 100 miles (or whatever) and fill it up again and then do the math. Then you know EXACTLY what your mileage is.

SiL has a 4.3 in a 1500 and doesn't get any better mileage than my 6.0 in a 2500HD. Gear ratios have a lot to do with it, and 4WD will drag it down too.

11 is low, but but not horribly so. I get around 14, SiL gets maybe 13 on a good day.

Sucks, doesn't it?

I had 2 of these things, I got better gas milage, maybe 16 -17, but I am usually on the highway @70 or on a 55 mph 2 lane. Around town it will not be very good, stop and go driving is inefficient. When I was your age, I had old beaters, 350 v8s, but fuel was .25 per gallon. I guess it costs a lot more to be a kid now.
