well we don't want to spend anymore money on the stupid thing since there's about a grand in it already. So we went to Napa and are getting a tach to mount on the side of the dash that will run to the alternator. If we knew what we knew then, we would of had Ames Auto Electric redo it. And to the Midwest Farmer- who are you!? You sure caught me off guard when you mentioned Ryerson's and Ames Auto.

I just bought parts to fix a GM alt. from Ames Auto. Cost me $8.40 for the diodes, regulator and brushes.

Unless you no longer have the original, I bet you will spend nearly as much on the jury-rigged tach at NAPA as you could get the alt rebuilt for. Can't imagine you pitched it.
I have had at least 50 alternators rebuilt- usually $60-100. Most expensive EVER was $175.
