I bought a 1937 model A john deere for $100.00 in 1986 that had been parked in a barn yard untouched since the early 1960's. The tractor had sit so long the exhuast pipe had rusted clear off back to the manifold and the bottom of the air filter was rusted clean off also, All the tires was rotten and falling off the rims. Rust was all over it. I bent down to read the serial number as I stood back up I grabbed the flywheel to steady myself. To the owner of it and my surprize the flywheel turned! Yes this tractor was not stuck in fact the valve was not stuck on it either. I drained over 7 gal. of water out of the crank case when I got it home. My best guess is that the oil floated up on the water, Oil flowed into the cylinders saved them from sticking. It had round spoke rims I saved them and sold the rest of it for junk 25 years ago. I sure wish we could turn back time this tractor should have been saved. Is there anyone else found a tractor sitting outside that many years that was not stuck?

A worn out tractor with lots of oil in the cylinders will sit for years without sticking

When i was kid my friend had an old 28 Chevy doodlebug at his place we played with a little put in some gas and towed to start it and in no time had it running. Wish things were that simple now.

I got my 48 Case La from a guy that said it sat in a lean-to for 20 plus years... it had a flat tire so he drug it out and put new gas in it and a battery... hit the started to see if it turn over... the 4th hit it was running... I got it and clean cab... and oils and it runs great.. Someday I will paint it.... for now it gives me pleasure the way it is.. Mark

If we could turn back time, the second thing on my mind would be a tractor. Priorities.

My massey 65 had several gallons of water in the gearbox, but the oil had floated to the top and sealed it, I suppose. No corrosion, no damage. Just had to drain it. I do not think the tractor was run much since it had gotten in there. I had 5 gallons of water and 4-5 gallons of gear oil in there. Was pouring out of every orifice it could as the water level came up.

Not totally sure. It coulda been that I was livin' right. Nah, probably not...

A couple years ago I bought a Case DC that had been tucked away in a shed for close to 30 years. The engine was free, but calcium had rusted through one of the rear wheels. I rebuild the head, the carburator, and the magneto. It fired right up. After a new set of tires and rims it took 4th place at the pulls last year in the 5500 lb class.

I was visiting with an old old-iron collector at a sale a while back - he was telling me about an old Twin City that had been in one of his pastures ever since he bought the place many years ago - one day he was fixing fence near it and decided to go look at it - he tried to turn it over and it was free!!

He went back a year or two later and tried it - and it was stuck this time!

He thinks the original position of the motor had caused a closed valve to shed the water that had run into the exhaust system and when he moved it - it now let the water into the cylinder...

Sounds plausible to me...
