Found last night, 400 pound calf was on it side with only one nostril above the water. Scooped it up and got it in the barn up. Setting up today and chewing its cud. Seems to be breathing hard. what to do now? does it stand a chance? give up and shoot it?

Mr.Soldan and Dinglebery are right. It will also respond to a good brush down and any attention you can give it. Don't send your kids in to help though...You'll end up with a pet or even worse it will die on them.

What others said for meds, I keep an old blanket in the barn for such occasions, put it over him and tie it..can make a world of difference to get his body temp up and maintained

Give the calf something like LA200 20CCs in the muscle and 20CCs under the skin, but no more than 10CCs per sight. 2 or 3 sulfa pills wouldn"t hurt any either then 6-8CCs of Banamine preferably in the vein. If that doesn"t cure, it probably won"t make it. This treatment described is geared toward pneumonia which it undoubtably has now if not before. Good Luck.

My biggest worry would be pneumonia from exposure and possible inhalation of nasty water. I've had calves with pneumonia and they didn't chew their cud, they were too sick.
Hold your fire he might make it.

Just keep dry bedding under him. If you think he's ready to try to get up,get him by the tail and pull sideways toward his legs and up as he tries. You might have to steady him. I had a first calf heifer that was paralized and down for 9 days last year. I did that with her. Had to do it for 4-5 days before she could steady herself and stand alone.

Have you considered calling the vet,or isn't it worth the money to you?

If he live's some where like here calling a vet on the weekend will not do much good. Good large animal vets are very few and far between round here. If it don't bark or purr, you ain't gonna get any one who knows what they are talking about on the phone on a Saturday. My brother is still waiting on the best large animal around here to call him bout a new born calf that got down in some cold water back in the fall. He is doing fine, about to be weaned but the vet never called back.

Like the others have said, get some LA200 in him and keep him warm and dry for a while, if he keeps his head up, keeps chew'n cud, and wants feed and water he should be fine.

We're lucky around here in that aspect. We've got a clinic 15 miles away with 6 vets on the road. Doesn't usually take very long for one of them to get here.

I agree a 400lb calf is worth calling a vet to save it.

Needs antibiotics for exposure. Some will never get up due to stress. Chewing cud is a good sign.
