I just drove over and previewed some to the stuff at MacFaddens first big spring auction - Sharon Springs, New York. What a mess after the 8" heavy spring snow we just got. I didn't stay long since I was dragging a four-year old kid with me and he fell in a snow bank and got pretty wet.

I saw a couple of pieces I'd wanted to leave bids on - but Jim Macfadden wouldn't take any absentee bids - which kind of surprised me. There's a JD300 with hoe on it I'd buy if cheap, also a one-row potato planter, an IH 500 dozer, and also the little Avery in one the photos. A lot of old Cases, IHs, Cats, Fordsons, etc.

It's a pretty neat place even without the big auction. Acres and acres of woods filled with antique tractors. Largest antique tractor salvage yard I've ever been to.

Is he also Sharon Springs Garage ? They have a location right down the road at what was an old JD, then Ford dealership( was Ford after we sold out ). They have a Kubota line out front, and are right next to Rifenburg Construction- Park East Sales which is their equipment division, you may have seen them doing road construction, they are a very successful company, working all over the state and now in NC.

I was at his place, last time in '04, looked like they were fooling with several D8K's, having spent a lot of time on those I took a look at one in his yard and there were a pair further down the road, all looked to have new undercarriages, and in good shape, maybe gov't surplus painted yellow, who knows, and you're right there is a lot of tractors and equipment there, I know someone who grabbed a 3020 a few years ago, no nothing of JMAC's business ethics, do remember a lot about being in that business though. There sure is some nice hay ground over that way, I came in from east berne ended up on 20 somewhere, liked what I saw on the back roads over there, kind what it used to be like here.

The businesses aren't related. MacFadden sells new Euopean tractors e.g. Landini. He also has the largest tractor salvage yard I've ever been too; probably one of the largest in the northeast. Acres and acres of woods full of antique and more modern stuff- farm tractors, crawelers, backhoes, etc. He also had some European version IH, AC, and MH tractors - mostly models I've never heard of with small one or two cylinder diesel engines. If you were at Sharon Springs garage in 94, you might of met a young blonde-haired mechanic there named Ernie. He lived in my town - big tall heavy kid that loved tractors. He got killed around 95 on his way to work seven in the morning. Crashed head-on into a large maple tree - nobody knows for sure what happened. I'd just got done giving him some pointers on rebuilding a Deere 4020, and he was pretty excited about working on it.

Don't know or ever heard of this auctioneer! The thread on this blog site is about all actioneers tend to be something about their blood lines. Even the ones I enjoy seeing in action have short comings. They all pick bids so that is the trade and they have to make it sell for the owner. Some have real brass balls that bang together when walk. I watch a team in the early 70's in SE Iowa. The price that they started with had NO drop back to get a bid. Yes, they bought a couple of items, but the sale moved and no one had a grip. None of the current BS of starting thousands over what it is worth. Seperates the men from the boys and sale end a couple of hour before most and bidders either bid or go home kicking road apples. I have a couple that I rather not talk about. I learned their style of time wasting of one to two minutes on every item and wait until they settle down to actually get serious on each items and have bought from them. Just learn the quirks of each and go with the flow. The sale barn auctioneers have the best chant.

I like the Case IH Maxxum in the 3rd, 4th, and 6th picture. Looks like a 5230?.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but thats NOT an auction, Its a TAG sale. If he dont get what he wants it will go to bidder # 5 from PA, and be there for the next auction. Hes a Crook.

No, it's not always that way. This is a consignment auction and there are people bringing stuff in from all over. I've lived here 30 years and been to many of Jim's auctions - his own at his own yard and also the ones he does off-site for hire. Sometimes stuff goes cheap, but not often. Jim et. al. don't buy everything back.

Last year's auction I went over because there was a 32 hoe off the back of a Case 580CK that I needed (I still do). I asked Jim if I could leave an absentee bid and he said no. I left and didn't come back to bid on it. The next week I drove back over to get some parts out of his salvage yard. I came across a guy loading the Case hoe onto his trailer. He had gone to the auction, only two people bid on the hoe, and he bought it for $500.

Did the hoe have a governor on it?

No! That hoe is way below his price range. He doesn't want to own anyway but rent by the hour.
