OT Economic Stimulus Payment for Pensioners-Help!

This requirement applies to veterans and others who receive pensions, but do not have to file a tax return

I said, "Didn't you get paid cash for painting someone's house?" I told him he needed to turn that in by filing an amended return.

He did as I said and ended up owing the state about $60, but he has several hundred more coming back from the IRS and $900 from the economic stimulus package. He has a wife and a dependent, thus he will receive $900.

He was pretty happy with my advice. It should net him about $1500.

The point is, if anyone falls below the threshold, they should consider other income that they may not have thought about. You know, the under the counter kind. In the end, you might get more money back than you thought and you will be legal.

It was something I thought about. He probably retired way to early, which is what I thought when he said he was going to.

But your saying that him being legal, is rotten and welfare fraud? Hardly. If anything, it should teach him to turn in any income he receives. He had turned in other income, but it was below the $3000 cut-off.

This actually was something that was argued about a lot. The people most likely to spend it, folks like my Dad who are living pretty much on fixed incomes with very little income at all, will not get the money. The arguement being that they don't pay taxes, so why should they get money. To that, I guess you could call it welfare. They could have called it that anyway.

Myself, I think it is a big steaming pile of dog doo and will only serve to weaken the economy further by driving up inflation. Its not like the US has that money somewhere hidden to give out. They are pretty much printing it out, to give it out. But it gets the politicians re-elected by those who don't take the time to look at what is really going on.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

The check we get will go into three 529 plans, much to the chagrin of the politicians.

But, what made me question it was my Dad telling me he wasn't going to get esp payment. I knew he had screwed up, because I knew roughly what his income was, outside of retirement checks. I have no idea what he receives via his company retirement account.

That is, I knew he made slightly more than the $3000 cut-off, just because I knew he held a part time (occasional) job. That, and the house painting job. I don't know what he got as a tax return. I do know, if I deserve it and you deserve it, then anyone else out there probably deserves it. (Not that anyone should be getting it)

Oh, yes, I have a job and to tell you the truth, I wouldn't take my own financial advice, so I wouldn't expect anyone else to take it either.

But you could go through all my tax returns, if you wanted and you wouldn't find any problems, other than wondering why I don't have much as far as investment income. Probably cause my wife likes to stimulate the economy every month with our credit cards. That, and my tractor habit.

I sleep well at night too.

80% will go to pay late bills. Meaning the electricity will be on for another couple months.

Trust me, I'm from the Government and I'm here to help you and give you money.

On those on SS without additional income over the minimum number, surely there is a stipulation in the package as to being able to receive it when you are not required to file a 1040 under the IRS code. I would surely check it out. Maybe you just file one this year just to qualify even though you will just be going through the motions.

I have already received my notice indicating what you said about having to file this year. Interesting that it came from the IRS. I think I like that.....using taxpayers (including retired taxpayers on SS) as a basis for the handout. Gives it some accountability as to who deserves it...if you get the gist.

Course you know as well as I that it IS income and as such there will be a special line on the 2008 1040 to record it since it isn"t wages.

It's a simple thing to do, and there is an information packet that explains what the non filer has to do to get their payment.
