All I can say is.

Wow... what a punch these babies have.

I just blew a 1/2 inch hole in a 4 inch dia. 30 year old locust post.

Some neighbors came over from a mile around to see what I was doing. Yeah, loud.

I love shooting handguns with my dad. My favorite is the .38 special. I also like the .357 mag. I do most my hunting with shotguns. Even grounghogs. I like to do that because it gives me some practice sneeking close enough to get them. We also use rifles on groundhogs. I seen dad get one at 300 yds. with the 6 mil. Got to always be real carefull though so you don't hit somebody's house.

I had a "Goose" gun for a while. It was a bolt action 12 gauge with a 36" barrel.

Don't remember who made it.

Dan. Marlin made the 12 ga 36" goose gun. My brother borrowed mine to dove hunt. Came up a thunder storm and he was walking out of the field with the barrel up. I told him what a lightning rod it would make. Lowered it and made it back to the truck safely. David.

I bought a single action .44 mag revolver a couple of weeks ago. That sucker will get your attention when you squeeze the trigger with mag loads in it. I've been using .44 Specials for target shooting.

I'm thinking of trying deer hunting with it this fall. To be legal for deer hunting in Nebraska, a handgun needs to produce 400 pounds of energy at 50 yards. With the exception of my .357 mag, all of my other handguns, .44's and .45's come just under 400. I have smaller ones that don't come close. The .357 mag is about 525 and the .44 mag is around 735.

Interestingly enough, I do my most accurate handgun shooting with a replica of an 1851 Confederate Navy .44 cap and ball, and I qualified "Sharpshooter" with the .45 auto in the Marine Corps.

I used to hang a target on a 6" fence post in back of my shop till I shot the post in two.

Do you load your own? Try some Hornady 300 grain XTP's for deer. A friend loads them for me, just under the max. load, and they kick out of my 10 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk at about 1300 feet per second. I'm sure I could kill 2 deer with 1 shot if I could get them lined up. Never much tracking involved if you hit them right with a bullet like that!

My dad was something of a gun nut. He had an H&H 375 magnum (elephant gun) which he talked me into shooting. The shell is about the size of a man's finger. I weighed about 120. He kept telling me it didn't kick much. So we went out to where he did his target shooting. It was so heavy, I had to prop it up which should have told me I had no business shooting that rifle. To his great delight, I squeezed off a round. It went completely through a steel I beam. He said, see it doesn't kick much and went to look at the beam. I somehow managed not to cry. My shoulder hurt so bad it felt like someone had hit me with a sledge hammer. If my life had depended on a second shot, I would not be here today. I could barely move my right arm, much less chamber and fire another round. He asked if I wanted to shoot it again and I politely declined. Once was more than enough.

Those big H&H magnums came with a warning, "Never shoot from a prone position" .. Those guns pack some huge recoil forces.

Do you think one of them would be OK inside the hay barn for barn rat? :-)
