Always lock my vehicle. Keep house locked (especially when home), horse trailers locked, barn locked, gates locked etc. We pull the couplers off the goose neck trailers and store in a locked location. I pull the coupler out of my big aluminum goose neck horse trailer, run a logging chain through a pipe "T" which I put up in the nose of the goose neck then around the nose frame and secure with the biggest pad lock I could find to keep a thief from just inserting a coupler and driving off with it. Of course, we are in Dallas and they will steal anything. Had my truck box broken into twice in broad daylight in an open lot. People will use the bed of your pick up for their trash can. Right now we have some yahoos setting cars on fire. They've burned 16 so far. Burned a sheriff's squad car last night. Life in the city. Ain't it fun.

what? I used to leave mine unlocked hoping they would steal it and I could get a new one I hate the chevy 2500 HD i drive now. But now I lock it because now I work out of it as a contractor for a pool guy doing bobcat work. and I couldnt afford to lose all the tools in the bed and I really couldnt afford to lose my lazer in the cab. But if I wasnt working out of the truck I would leave it unlocked with a sign the said please take it. but when I do hopefully get a new dodge or ford i will lock it

A good friend always says locks only stop honest people and you don't need to stop them. By the way did anybody see on the news the anti carjacking device they have in South Africa. If anybody tries to carjack you, you flip a switch and it shoots a massive amount of flames out each side of the car. Lee

Most insurance companies won't pay off if you leave the keys in the car. I like my auto lock on my Ford it locks with the button on the key ring thing and will disconnect the ignition if broken into. You don't see many of this type of cars stolen. Walt

Never lock the car doors at home. In fact the keys are in both of them. I could not lock my house or shed if I wanted to since I have not seen the keys in years.

Now if we go to town we always lock the car doors and if I stop somewhere with my pickup I have a habit of checking the bed to see if there is any thing I want to set in the cab and lock up while I am in the store.

Things used to be OK, here, but there are a lot of young punks on crack and meth roaming the area.. no jobs, all they care about is the next fix of dope.. they get wired up, steal a car, and go on stealing sprees that last for days, until the high wears off and they collapse for several days.. I know this sounds cold, but the hard-core doper thieves do not last long..

We all lock things up, here. There is a Roach Motel full of druggies, about a mile away, so we keep everything locked..

You live right next door to Cedar Rapids and you don't lock your doors? That's just asking for trouble. I keep mine locked (except for the old soft-doored utility Jeep) even out here in the neighboring small towns. I figure that's what power locks are for, and I don't want to lose my GPS or radio gear. I keep the house doors locked all the time too. There have been dozens of burglaries recently out here in the county, including a few when folks have been at home. There are 45 good reasons why you don't want to try that here.

I have read the responses and some of you should consider a few things. I live in a very safe , quiet low crime area..and that means nothing, kids from other towns invaded our town one night, rifled several cars and my pick up. Criminals do travel!..it isn't locals who commit these crimes..anyway about three weeks later the OPP caught a carload of them driving around in a stolen car about 3AM. They were all from a town 20 mles north of us, and they had been going around rifling vehicles..so living in a safe low crime area doesn't mean a thing..a lot of our rural B andE's around here are comitted by city thiefs and the arrests document that, they drive out into the rural areas and do daylight break ins..so if you don't lock up you will be a victim. I lock my truck all the time but that particular night I had forgot to..truck and glove box rifled..lost about $5 in change..just made a mess..when they were caught they were mostly 16 year olds..with a stolen car that the keys were left in..... You might want to think about it.

dang. Were pretty tight out here. Our neighbors came home one day and found their other car wide open and a mess inside, and called me over. I was thinking "Gee-ive been in my shop alone all afternoon-i dont even have an allibie for this one" but they were asking anyone if anyone had been over for a "visit". People here may be a little TOO trusting. LOL another time i was helping the farmer bale hay in this field next to a house with a barn that the hay was to go in. There was a truck in the way, and i knew the people through the church. We called them, and they told us they just left and would be back in a few hours, but fed us instructions through the phone-house keys under this, now look in here-nothing?? Look in this room-now in this one. We never found the keys but the guy discovered the truck was a manuel and parked on a slope so he hit the clutch and it rolled..... ..I love this place!!

Many of the cars in my town don't even get the keys pulled out of the ignition, much less not getting locked. I just about always leave the keys in my cars and truck when in my own town. When I go eslewhere - the keys go in my pocket.

Another thing is to always remove your GPS if it is worth anything. I didn't when I parked in the parking lot in front of a store and my window was broken to grab the GPS. The car alarm went off but by that time they were probably almost in their vehicle and driving off. So besides the GPS I was out $175 for a side window plus the inconvience.

I'm very lucky to live in a neighborhood that has almost no crime. A few roadsigns were knocked over on my road a year ago but that's about it. We never pull any keys here on the farm and the shop is unlocked unless we are on vacation. In our little local towns we never pull car keys, but in the county seat, we have two packing plants, employing plenty of our immigrant 'friends'. Leaving the keys in a car in that town is an invitation for our licenceless, insuranceless, friends to go for a drive. I even lock my rusty old S-10. If one of them would drive it away, it's almost a guarantee they will have a wreck and then I'm liable. Jim

Always do if I am away from home. Seldom do at home. Never had any trouble here. One day I went to lunch with one of my coworkers, who lived in Detroit. Before he started up his car, he reached under the dash and flicked a switch. I saw that and I said " Artie, who would steal this piece of Shiit?" ( 1977 Olds, made from 2 ) Artie says " In my neighborhood, if it runs, it's gone." He also didn't lock it, kept them from breaking the windows to get in. Don't think I'd want to live in his hood.

my 86 olds gets locked at work but the key stays in the ignition only the key no ring but I only lock it to keep the rummaging Mexicans out not all do but the ones that do make it necessary. at home the truck car and tractors have keys in them from time to time some times as long as months. The only car that gets locked is my wifes Mustang she loves that thing and always keeps it locked even at home.

You must always lock cars if they are outside. Lock your home up too, If you are there or not. Punk kids will rip off just about anything of value to buy dope or beer. I have heard of kids stealing deck furniture in the middle of the night for kicks, even just planted shrubs yanked out of the dirt. Outdrive motors stolen off of boats, tires off of new cars in dealerships, gas and diesel out of cars. I could go on for a while. But....lock it all up, keep a shotgun handy and be sure to only shoot somebody if they are in your house.

I lock because it slows down amateurs. Real thief you can't stop. Also keep door locked when driving. Its purty hard to stop somebody already in the door. Watch side streets in city, don't get jammed in where you can't get out. Lotta police calls go without response.

Locked, or locked in garage. Cars have 2-way radios, stereo equipment, that we'd hate to loose. Have a driveway monitor (motion sensor) and two motion sensors on lights over any cars parked in drivaway. Had a battery swiped from tractor right in yard, less than 75 feet from my bedroom window, and under a "security" light last fall. Been mighty careful to lock up 'bout evrything I can now.

Lock em? Heck I don"t even take the keys out of mine, even in town most of the time.

Somewhere or another in the universe there exists a set of keys that fit the doors to my house. I dunno where they would be, I haven"t locked the house in 14 years, even when I"m out of town.

It"s nice to live somewhere where you can do that, but there"s less and less of them all the time.

He went into the drug store, left his engine running and 5min latter he was walking...LOL

I'll never forgot his words, Well geez we don't have to do that in Texas where I live!!!

I have used that trick since 73 of the 5 gal. can with one of gas and 4 of water after one bozo got me for a free five one night The old 73 F250 4X4 sure liked her gas and a 19 gallon tank did not go far when out playen in the back country strip mines And running out of gas back then in the middle of the night was not fun so i always carried a spare ten and that would get me home . Not that night as i only had the one and atleast i was able to get close enough to be in radio range of my one buddy and get ahold of him to bring me a five more . After that both cans had one gallon of gas and 4 water. Reframed from going out to the strip mine from the local watering hole . The next weekend i got hit again and down the road from the local watering hole sat this chevel dead in the road with the hood up , Just had to drive down and asked if he had car troubles he said yes it just coughed and quiet . Asked if he had gas he told me oh yea i have a 1/4 tank , told him that ya really have to watch where ya get gas from and drove off and wet home . Few years later the neighbors started stealing the lawnmower gas out of our garage Did the same thing to them here in this town any JUNK car or truck that has not moved in two weeks can get towed , they lost five cars to me .

I always lock my cars up. One day 2 years ago, I had my work truck warming in my driveway-it is only 12 feet from my front door, and had done it that way for several years. Yes, some low life just got in and drove off with it! They get locked warming up now no matter what! Must be most of 10 years ago, some really bad murdering dude was known to be heading west on I80, I believe he was an escapee. Anyway, the police told everyone to lock up their cars in the rural areas. One guy was quoted as saying that he kept his vehicle unlocked, with the keys in it, because he did not want the guy getting any more aggitated than he already was-seemed prudent at the time! Greg

Sometimes if left unlocked and or keys left in it insurance wont pay damage saying it's your own fault and in some cases you could be held lieable for damage done to someone or something because you didn't lock or remove keys. Stupid but laws are sometimes against owner, so cover your butts, lock and remove keys. I've seen good people out lots of money and involved in law suits because of this very subject. Like I said, stupid but laws don't always stand behind the owners.

If it is in your driveway--lock it. Breaking makes too much noise. If it stalls and you have to leave it out over night along the hiway or in a parking lot--leave it unlocked. They will break in every time.

I don't even take the key out. I figure most thieves have too much class to drive what I do.:) TDF

We've been locking doors now since 1995 or so.

Why not lock 'em? - That's why the factory makes locks - if an idiot decides to break a window to get my belongings, let him. Let God be the judge of that. I'll be pissed off, but what can I honestly do?

One thing that works well and will not really hurt any one is hook it up to a fencer. A person touches the car and they get the $##% zapped out of them. And as far as locking if they want in they will brake a window so then your out the cost of a window.

Wouldn't that screw up a cars computer? I don't think I'd want to risk that, got enough trouble with the Ford van's sensors as it is.

We should, the wife was at the store(town of 600) and saw our Jeep doing a U-turn and heading out of town. The MOHP found it 20 miles away. The key is in it right now.

Seems I remember old timers telling me how they'd rig up a magneto, or something to shock people with, Just pull up to the next car and touch bumpers!
