I converted a 1948 8N to 12 volt, however the instructions on how to hook up the wires from the alternator were very poor. If I hook it up so that alternator charges the battery, the battery will drain when the tractor is shut off.

Any tips would be appreciated.

It depends on what type of alternator. You cannot have fulltime power to the field/exciter terminal of the alternator or it will drain your battery. It needs to be switched either electronically or mechanically. This is usually done with the ignition switch wiring - unless you've got an electronic self-exciting regulator.
