Thanks Tractorman NC, I found it in My parts book about the time You posted, guess someone broke the Street L off, the hole is plug with a 1/8 pipe plug...I've got this bright idea now, by usein' nipples and a tee I'm thinkin' about installin' a gauge at the block like is on My Farmall A, installin the sendin' unit in the other end of the tee and wirein' to the idiot light, that way I'll have a light and gauge and like You mentioned, it is easy to knock off so I'll fab up some kind of guard.

Now can somebody clue Me in about the one wire GM alternator? In the beginnin' this tractor (1964) came with a generator, somewhere along the line somebody replaced the generator with a three wire alternator, did a bad job of fabin' a mount, possibly usin' the orignal voltage regulator.I'm rewirein' most of the wirein', Would the one wire alt. do away with the voltage reg, where does the wire run too, straight to the battery? If it is fairly easy to explain I'd appreciate help with this, wirein' can give Me fits sometime, I'm sure this Alt. that is on it now isn't chargein'...And does anyone have the GM parts number for the one wire ALT?
Thanks for the Help
Wild Bill

Thanks to all Yaw'l, After lookin'at the photo that is the road I'm gonna walk...I walked over to My 1981 one ton GMC, been tryin to find time to pull the 454, 4 speed and dually rear end, scrap the rest, the alternator on the 454 looks like the one in the photo, Do You think it will work? If it won't,I'll buy the recomended one. I've walked this earth 66 years, somehow not much electrial Knowledge has fallen on Me. After I wire to the amp meter, Where do I go? Is it possible to post a sketch showin' a simple diagram from the alt, ,switch, and where ever else it runs? I want to keep it as simple as possible. Again..Thank Yaw'l

You should presently have a wire running from the voltage regulator to the ammeter. Just replace that with the wire from the alternator to the ammeter, and leave everything else as is (except, of course, you remove the generator, voltage regulator, and the two wires that run between those items).

I just did my 504, got the parts from Napa. The alternator was a Ray, part #2134011. I also got a diode plug, Wilson part# 20019030, so that all you need to run is one actual wire from the alternator to the battery.

Glad I could help with the O.P. issue. As for the alternator I am with Bob 100% The three wire are SLIGHTLY more trouble to hook up but they are worth it in the long run.

There is NO GM part number for a "one-wire" 10SI, 'cause GM did't MAKE a "one-wire" 10SI.

It is the AFTERMARKET folks, trying to make things simpler for the "electrically challenged" that came up with that GOOFY idea, which comes at a cost of it's own set of problems.

Just connect up a STANDARD 10SI three-wire alternator as shown in the photo, and you'll have NO problems!

Third Party Image

You can use a #194 lamp as an idiot lamp OR a 10-Ohm, 10-Watt resistor, or the diode, (as shown).

Pick ONE of the 3. ALL 3 work equally well.

Wild,

I thought most (all)of the GM alts, at least what they call the 10SI series(3wire) had built in regulators. That's what the "SI" stood for. I guess some folks leave the old regulator on but the wires going to it might not be wired into the charging system.

I believe the one wire alternators are 10SI units that are changed internally so that they are self exciting. Most tractors have to be rev'ed up pretty good to make them start charging. Once that is done they will still charge even at idle until the engine is shut down.

I personally like the 3 wire which is in reality only a '2 wire'.One to excite and the larger terminal to the battery circuit.

For a 1 wire use the smallest pulley possible to make the alt spin as fast as is practical.
