I just purchased this tractor a couple of weeks ago and am having issues with the hydraulic system. The previous owner had used hydraulic fluid in the system and I noticed in the manual that it called for motor oil instead. Could this be part of the problem? I also need to know how to properly bleed the entire system? Any other suggestions?

I've owned several David Browns and the hydraulics seem to be their weak point.Great on fuel though.

Use your electric block heater ,,,Be careful using ether as a start aid ,, a guy across the way broke a crankshaft , I hear of others ruining pistons on the 4 cylindar D Brown motors .. could be just a Coincidence , but around here , these problems have occured , and ether has been blamed

This was common in British tractor of that period, it made life easier for a lot of export markets, as the dealers/farmer etc would then only have to carry one type of oil. I have a pair of "66 Nuffields that call for engine oil in the transmission, but i"ve always used transhydraulic oils so there is no contamination between tractors and hydraulic systems on different machines.

Get a filter and a screen for the trans and change it out. There could be metal particles and such in the screen, this needs to be cleaned out. I did a 1200 DB trans for a friend of mine, changed the fuel filters, engine oil and oil filter. The screen had metal filings in it and a filter that hadn't been changed for a long long time..then just cycle the steering and hydraulics until they start to work properly, they bleed the air out themselves, I used hytrans fluid in it and everything is working fine. Yours must be older than the one I did because it had hyraulic oil in it and I replaced it with hydraulic HyTrans
