Looking at a New Holland that had a pump shot at 1400 hours, was sent to dealer 1 to be replaced, spent 5000$, 1800 hours the hydraulics were gone again. Dealer 1 had gone under, took to dealer 2, he says the pump was never replaced, and shaft is scored terrible, suspects only a pickup screen was cleaned by dealer 1.

Tractor is for sale at a great price, who here would dare take a chance... I'm thinking you'd want to spent some money on a few flushings and flush the loader well.

I'm not sure I would dare touch it, it seems like stuff gets lodged everywhere in valve circuits and comes back to haunt you.

What tractor and what hydraulic system? If it's a 40/TS, then specify which pump...

 Correction/update in reply to RodInNS, 03-18-2008 11:39:33
Its a 1999 TL100, haven't seen it, the main pump is external. I found out more info, it isn't a reverser equipped model, dual speed only. Also found out the pump wasn't he problem, its the key way on the shaft was stripped out. Dealer 1 seems to have rebuilt the keyway and billed for a new pump. Owner stopped using it as soon as the hydraulics died and dealer 2 opened it up to find keyway wallowed out, sheared key and severe score marks on the shaft as if the engine had run a while on the sheared shaft.

Makes me feel a bit better about it. I understand some of these TL's have the steering pump on a priority circuit where it helps run implements when not steering?

Hmmm. Fiat, so it wouldn't be my cup of tea anyway. Doesn't sound to serious though. Wonder why the key was sheared in the first place? Relief valve not functioning perhaps and the pump somehow got 'dead headed'? The 'why' and the answer would concern me more than the simple fact that the key was sheared and the shaft buggered. Shafts can be replaced. Can break again pretty quick too if the real problem hasn't been found.
Give a hollar for RickB over on the Ford board if he doesn't chime in here. He knows those things pretty well I believe.

The wear I attribute to the fact the machine didn't have a loader its first 1200 hours so the pump was obviously left broken while the steering pump did its duties and they just drove the thing, unless they are on a common shaft. I'll try to track Rick down.

Sell it "as is" and be honest about the thing or it may come back to haunt you.

Cleaning one about means a complete tear down of the hydraulic system that every little part and the big ones too.

I'm looking at this one, not selling it. A JD dealer is selling it after they replaced the pump. Haven't heard yet how much tear down they did.

I was thinking the price was far too good to be true!

If you have the time and a clean place to work you could do it. A pressure washer would be good for cleaning lines and hoses out, then wash with varsol. All lines, cyls, valves and tank need to be taken apart and cleaned.

BTW it is a dual speed with wet main clutches to make matters worse.
