my father has a 97 3500 pickup that spun a main and locked down Vortec 350. I have a 94 350 out of a Z71 , I know the basics are the same mostly top end makes it a vortec can I swap the intake and related components to the 94 and make it run? we are not worried about the power just need it to move. Vortec has 213,000+ miles and the 94 350 has less than 60,000 it was in a wreck and I bought it for a van I had then later it fried the electrical system. I have had it in storage for a few years and would like to help him get rolling again.

I'd be inclined to do as "circus" says and look into just replacing the bearings, don't always believe advice from the guy who's gonna make money off of you.

We used to have an old willys jeep that would spin a bearing and lock up the motor any time you over revved it. Replaced the bearings 3 times myself over a period of 25 years, was still drivable down the road at 60mph the day I sold it.

You say "we are not worried about the power just need it to move."

So what you got to loose? if it wont run after you replace the bearings you can still look into the engine swap..you'd only be out the cost of the bearings and a little work.

I know the Vortec heads produce more power than the regular ones that is the power I was talking about. the block and cap are scared up bad and I will not spend money on something that might fail. I have built many engines and all went over 100,000 miles so if I repair if I will either get a block or use the one I have in the 94 engine. I appreciate all views that everyone has just don't want to go through this again in a few weeks.

Don't know about the swap but maybe the spun main might be fixed. Happened to me one cold day 15 years ago. Machine shop wanted to rebuild $$$$. I removed the oil pan and bearing caps. Tapped off fused bearing, drilled out passages and wrapped crank journals with paper towels soaked in muriatic acid. After a couple of hours of replenishing the acid the journals were clean. New bearing $30 and good as new. Still use the diesel all the time.

If I remember right Roy, the intake bolt holes in the 94 head are different the the 97. the angle is different. you will have to do some reaming to make it work. Do you plan on using the old set up or just the shortblock from the 94? The intake ports on the vortec heads are alot larger as well. GM makes an intake to run vortec heads on the 94 engine with the throttle body. Good luck,
Charles

I was told that for sure I could use the block as the bottom end on the vortec was ruined and would need to be line bored. My only concern is the crank sensor as I know it would need it to run correctly
