What is involved in buying a vehicle in a different state? For example I live in Ohio and have been looking at some trucks in Indiana. Thanks

Hi Bubb,

On a dealer sale there's no problem. Dealers have alot to risk.

On a private sale, then I will always go to the DMV with the owner and get a new title before I pay the money, then take that title to my state for registration.

That way you never get into a problem on the title. Most States could care less where a vehicle is titled but current registration is always critical.

When buying from out of state basically the only difference is before they will transfer the title into your name, you have to have the vehicle inspected. If I recall right its around $10.00(its been a couple years). They check the VIN and the odometer to whats on the title. The BMV and some car dealers can do the inspection.

Bought a 70 GMC 2500 pickup in Wisconsin last June. Went to Illinois DMV. Had signed title from Wi and a handwritten bill of sale. No problems at all. Bought a 68 Chevelle last August, again in Wisconsin. Had title, handwritten bill of sale. Again no problems. About 3 weeks later we get an envelope from Illinois Dept of Revenue. They thought the car was worth more than we paid, wanted us to pony up an additional $1000 for tax. We sent them a xeroxed copy of everything we had. Aint heard nothing from them since.
Good luck.....don t. .....

I live in Ohio and have bought vehicles out of state. The last motorcycle I bought I got the title with no place to be notarized. Got a notarized bill of sale took both with the motorcycle on trailer to county title office/liciense dept. I had to get liciense dept to verify the vin number, then go over to title dept for new titile, then back to liciense dept for new tags

It all depends on the state. I got in a mess last year when I bought a Ford truck from a guy in Pennsylvania. I paid him, he signed the title over to me and I figured all was fine (just as it would of been here in NY, or Vermont, etc.). A few months later I tried to register it and couldn't. Found out that Pennsylvania requires all titles be signed by sellers in front of Notary Publics. New York told me they had to honor the PA regs. since it was a PA title. It took months to track the people down and get it done. If I hadn't of found them, I couldn't of regiestered the truck.

My son took my diesel Suburban back with him to Colorado, near Denver. They sent some sort of "vehicle tax appraiser and VIN" checker-person to his house and he had to pay to have both done before he could register it. Also had to get a smoke-opacity test done since it's a diesel.

It probably varies from state to state, but I live in Nebraska and I've bought a number of vehicles in South Dakota.

Here, I need to take the SD (or other state) title to the local Sheriff's office where they run the VIN to make sure it isn't stolen or have anything else dire in it's history. Then I simply take the form from the Sheriff's office, along with the SD title, to the County Clerk's office and follow the usual drill to get a Nebraska title and registration.

Each state has its own procedures, so it might be time well spent to visit the local office where you register vehicles to find out beforehand.

Same process in Kansas - only I don't think they run the VIN to see if its stolen - unless its after the fact. Basically they varify the VIN on the car/truck matches the one on the title. The fee is $10.00 and you have to have the VIN varification form to get your tags.

I bought a truck in Indiana from a dealer and brought it back to Michigan. They gave me a temporary title and plate and i paid sales tax in Indiana. Mi and In have a reciprocity agreement so Mi would get the sales tax. They me a form to give to the Sec of Stae when I titled it showing I paid taxes.
