Question: Several years ago My father purchased a farmall super a for parts, and the mower that was attached to it. We disassembled the entire tractor and stored the parts in the barn. He scrapped the engine block but kept everything else. Is there differencences in the majority of the parts between the 2 engines that I can use the parts from the original? or do I need to find one that the parts actually fit? How can I tell which one they fit? I dont have direct access to the serial number right now cause its in CO, and I live in MT. But I would like to restore it and make use of the parts, instead of letting them sit and rust/ collect dust in the barn. Can I tell which motor was in it by the serial #? Thanks

comtcwby: Farmall A srarted of with block part number 6342 DH and you can get 113 or 123 sleeves for it, but it is not drilled for a hydraulic pump. Block part number 251069 R1 was used in early SA (up to serial 310300) and all Farmall C, and you can get both 3" bore (113) or 3-1/8" bore (123), Block part number 354898 R1 was used in Super A after serial 310300 and all Super C, It was also used in 100 and 200 as R2 or R3, you can get 3" bore, 3-1/8" bore and 3-1/4" bore for any of those engines. Block part number 366204 R1 was used in 130 and you can only get 3-1/8" bore or 123. Block part number 367825 R1 was used in 140 and again only 3-1/8" bore but the water pump becomes an issue with that one.

Another thing to remember with all of this, even though they may be the same bore the sleeves will not interchange from one block to another except between 130 and 140.

You can probably tell by the serial number. You will need a block that had the hydraulic pump on it. Even if its a C113 block you can install an overbore kit to boost the the cid to 123ci. If you find a block from a Super C it would have the C123cid engine and some of the later Super A's had the same engine. Hal

Hal: Super A serial numbers and engine serial numbers will not match. Closest they come is close to 500 apart.

Hal: It sounds like he's trying to find a block to match his piston and sleeve kit, at least that is the impression I get. Going to be quite a chore since outside diameter and length of sleeve are different for each and every block part number. Kind of like looking for the lock that fits the key you have.

I don't think he can be that choicey. He will need to wait until he buys a block, then buy the sleeve kit to fit the block. The Super C sleeves are longer and I don't know what other tractors used these longer sleeve's. They all have the same stroke. I have 3 7/16" sleeve bore at the seal and 7 1/16" in length for the Super C. The C sleeve is 6 7/8" long and the sleeve measures
3 5/16" at the seal. Hal

Hal,
Any Ideas where to start? I planned on doing the total restoration anyways, new sleeves and all. For some reason all of the engines that I have dealt with that had sleeves were close to needing a replacement anyways. Are the heads the same? Thanks, you were a great help!

New sleeve kits are available, but you need to wait until you get a block. Do you have the crankshaft, old pistons, camgear and connecting rods? There's a difference in the overall length of the sleeves too. I would place this request on the Farmall forum too, since they can tell you if there's a difference in the head. I think all the Super A heads should be the same. If you don't have all those engine parts I listed you may be better off to buy the whole engine. Hal

Thak Hal,

I do have everything but the block and maybe the sleeves. I dont remember if we saved those or not... Knowing my dad, its very possible. He saved the sleeves out of a case VAC that still had the pistons stuck in them, dont know why because we had 3 parts tractors there when we rebuilt it. I just wish that he would have saved the block. I remember he scrapped the block because of a crack on the outside, and he couldnt weld. Not to mention that my mom was probably complaining about all of the dead tractors and spare parts sitting everywhere. We got rid of a lot a good things that were bigger and managed to keep parts and things that I have no idea why... Thanks for your help, I will post the question there as well!
Thanks again!
Glen
